Online Communities like Friendster

Pages: 1 39 replies

Who is on which other online communities?
I'm on friendster, match and MySpace

I like myspace the best so far... (Thanks to Sugar Caddy Daddy)

but what about http://www.hi5.com, http://www.orcut.com, http://www.lavalife.com or ????

I met my fiance on LavaLife.com(what it was before it was lavalife).
When I lived in Vancouver I met many good friends through ThePark.com, which stopped it's online world community in 2001.

Tiki Central is my favorite hands down.

Friendster is overcome by it's success. Every time they expand, more people join and their servers can't keep up, but it's fun to follow the threads and track down all these people I know who are on friend's, friend's, friend's lists somewhere!

look for me in friendster... unkle john or unklejohn or unkle_john

i can't remember, it's been awhile since i've gone.

swankster - or shall i call you winkster? do you want me to send you an invite to myspace?

S

Yeah, I couldn't get you friended there, as I had no email. That's a dumb way to do that I think. I also use a different email there.

The world is getting smaller.

T

I recently got my arm twisted into joining MySpace. I was surprised to find out how many of my pals (both E-friends and old-skool flesh n' blood people who I can calim to have been out drinking with) are on there.

S

I have tracked friends I lost through MySpace from San Francisco to right here in TN. It's nice.

I've got profiles on Friendster & MySpace; more people use Friendster, but MySpace is more reliable and is a little more interesting.

Friendster's networking functionality would be great, if it only went out 3 degrees instead of 4 (looks like they'll be pruning it back soon... that'll also help their server issues, I'm sure). I created a profile for my Bamboo Handbag to artificially get a 3-degree network.

My Bamboo Handbag has a profile on MySpace, too, but there I use it to connect to any & all tikphiles, whether I know them or not. If you're on MySpace, be sure to become friends with my Bamboo Handbag!

S

Friendster is s-l-o-w. Don't know if it's poor programming or server issues from traffic. Likely the latter. MySpace has very clear programming problems (i.e. if you log in at the MySpace.com page, it fails every time) and the code is so loose, you can drop anything in there and make some weird pages, (good/bad?) Maybe they can merge...

I just searched MySpace for those with "tiki" in their general description. 14 pages of a lot of 'billies mostly. Good to see. And one handbag...

Wow, half of TC is on there!
And now the truth comes out: do we have anything ELSE to talk about? :)

well we could dish about all the punksters and pornsters out there?

have you seen some o those animated gifs?

I get a kick out of seeing Elvis, Spicoli, and General Zod up there. Not to mention Bamboo Purse. I knew these people were out there in the world somewhere...

I wonder how long it wull be until the management cleans house on the BS accounts?

I just joined up. Devil Doll asked me to join cause she has put up a profile to announce her shows through. I was ver suprised to see a peopel I knew as I looked through it.

i think they actually encourage the silly accounts - i think it's part of the appeal of the site. it's fun being able to say andy warhol is your friend. they actually have a CCO Characters, celebrities and objects group which is very strict about who can be a part of it...

S

Actually, I think it's a better way to "group" yourself. There is a "Knoxvegas" for Knoxville and I found long lost Knoxville friends by looking at the friends of Knoxvegas. I'm sure the same goes for other icons. Where is David Lynch on there?

I used to be on friendster, but I gave it up as a new year's resolution. Here's why: it was benign enough, and nice to connect to people, but I was looking at the connections one day and realized - 'I really don't have 125,000' connections. So, that, combined with the fact that people were trying to connect up with me that I DIDN'T like and was too polite to refuse, led me to quit. I started thinking that through tikicentral and other forums (like car talk.com, and people finding my own site), I was already networking with all the people I really liked, and that Friendster was becoming more of something to be managed than to actually make connections with people.

That, and the fact you have to pay...

D

i have an account on friendster, but it takes SO long to navigate..

instead, i've moved to http://www.tribe.net ~ well, its me, but mostly pictures of my dogs, Cicely and Glacier.

I'm in as Cynner -- won't you be my friend?

Cynner ~ yay i've added you. i've joined the Tiki Tribe..but Tiki Central is where its at!

I just found out about myspace through my nephew. I originally set up an account for "networking" my biz but eventually became addicted. I've found people I lost track of, made some new friends and discovered umpteen underground bands. I even have Iggy Pop and Jack Black in my "friend's list"! (I'm not sure if it's really Iggy, but JB has been confirmed).

You can find me here, I'll add you too

If any of you on My Space see this in your request box then you'll know I've found you! Edvard Munch's The Scream painting was the first gif I ever animated.

My faves are deadjournal.com and tribe.net.

But I do not play well with others, so I just harrass people. @;-)

Mystiki...i love that photo of you on your "About Jamio" page...the frame is cool too!

M

hehe...that's my husband. He's the talented one. I'm the looozer who spends too much time on forum boards razzing people (not by design mind you, but I'm an ill-mannered, charm school drop-out @;-)

I've created a new MySpace profile for Ooga-Mooga to help spread the word to the wacky-yet-loveable non-TC tikiphiles out there. Add Ooga-Mooga to your friends list! I won't send out bulletins willy-nilly, just occasional stuff I think is of genuine interest to tikiphiles, mug collectors and Ooga-Mooga members.

http://www.myspace.com/oogamooga

Also! I've created a special cool image that lets you showcase your mug collection -- the image automatically selects a random mug from your own, personal collection every day. You can see an example of mine in my signature line on this post. It'll work for MySpace, too, you can check mine out on my MySpace profile, and you can get yours by going to "Fun Stuff" on Ooga-Mooga.

Humu even got ME turned on to MySpace

I signed up today. Ahh, I had nothing else to do.

I am on myspace. Just search for my name. I've been able to make contact with alot of people who I hadn't seen in years. So I guess as trendy as myspace is I still dig it.

I am on there as well as a ton of TCers
search out my name

M

I joined MySpace recently. I have found many TCers and it's a good place to learn more about them. Humuhumu is AMAZING! I never realized all the websites she was behind. I didn't know who she was dating etc... until I found her MySpace page.

Chongolio too... We have a lot in common that I never would have picked up on without finding his MySapce page.

find me at http://www.myspace.com/stuckonmaui

I'll be your friend!

I like Myspace and think what they're doing with music is swell...But doesn't it make you feel a little 4th grade to ask people "Can I be yer friend?"

It also seems a little abusive of the term "friend", especially when we know deep within our hearts that the path towards friendship begins in a well stocked bar.

MG

I just jumped on the wagon too...... I'm still trying to figure this stuff out.

Hey there TC'ers, I've been on myspace since nov 2005, sure you learn to selectively accept friendship - but I've found it a great way to network with fellow Tiki-philes and fellow artists. Sure TC is a tight operation - but the unique thing about my space is it allows you to dig a little deeper into the persons personality, their likes and dislikes. Sure overtime - through posts and replies at TC you start to "know" some of the members. On myspace - a couple visits to their page and you can learn a lot about a person and get a feel for their personality. At first I felt like I was treading where fourteen year-olds go - but soon realized how hip it is for any artists and any body with personality. I've made great friends there!

Got Tiki!

Hey everybody,

I'm new here. I just got finished posting my intro so I thought I would browse around the forums. I saw this thread about MySpace. My sister has been bugging me about doing a page. Today I finally got one put up. Check it out. http://www.myspace.com/roguespy007

I plan to check out the different pages of the members here. I'm just starting to get really into Tiki. It will be a cool way to get to know all of you better. I want to do some Tiki stuff on my page. Right now it's mostly about 60's spy movies. Thanks. I look forward to getting to know you all better and talking to you about Tiki. Take care.

Sincerely,
Keith
