Tons 'o Tiki in Reno Antique Malls

Pages: 1 9 replies

Last week, while in Reno for a meeting, I found some time to check out a few antique malls. The malls I visited were loaded with mugs from Trader Dick's and from Harvey's. Each mall had at least a dozen mugs. Prices varied wildly, but most were in the $5.00 range. I bought these three mugs and the candle holder for $25, total. The mug styles pictured were available at every store I visited. I know they're not the rarest mugs (at least not in Reno!), especially the 'peanut' mug, but they are nice. It's worth noting that the peanut mug was available in at least a half-dozen different glaze styles. Also for sale were various scorpion bowls (from Harveys) and some different Harvey's tumblers and some old Trader Dicks tumblers with surfer girls on them. If you find yourself in Reno, and you don't have these mugs, check it out.
Finally, does anyone know anything about the candle holder I found? It's marked "made in Oregon".

So thats what a peanut mug is! Thanks for including the prices; its empowering to know they are obtainable and inexpensive in Reno; I've bid on those a couple times on ebay and been blown out of the water at the last minute. Are you sure thats a candle holder? Is it open on the top? It looks kind of like a back-loading mug.

Fish Tank Deco maybe?

That candle holder is bitchin! Never seen one like that before.

I have the grey Moai, got him on ebay for $5 advertised as a fish tank Tiki, I use him to hold paintbrushes.

We went to Reno a week ago to celebrate my birthday, so prior to going I came into Tiki Central to see if I could find any tips on the area and Tiki and found plenty! Big thanks to everyone who posted about their experiences--it helped make mine better.

We would have never tried the Awful Awful burger if it hadn't been for the info here. We actually had it twice (once at The Farmhouse restaurant at The Nugget in Sparks, then again later at The Nugget in downtown Reno).

Here's a picture of me holding the menu at the downtown Reno Nugget after I secured one of the hard-to-get seats during the lunch hour rush. The guy in front of me told me that I'd "better grab that seat while I could!".

I loved Trader Dick's and got it on film on my mini DV. What a cool place! I picked up the usual mugs (the first two in the photo) then found the third tiki for $2 at an antique store.

The seller had the third tiki pictured marked at $4.50 but sold them to me for $2.00 each (she wanted to clear them out). I got three, and left a bunch behind because I was flying home and didn't have the room...so go get them if you want them!

Also picked up the Scorpion Bowl at Trader Dick's (my one casualty that I glued back together today, sigh), and a Harvey's Lake Tahoe bowl for $3.50:

I just may keep this as my official Tiki Farm swizzle stick holder on my Tiki Bar.

My last Tiki find was a PMP mug in great condition.

We stayed at the Silver Legacy and I found this Tiki Slot Machine. I actually got in trouble for taking this photo (apparently photographing the slots is a no-no) but then he changed his mind when I told him I didn't know I couldn't photograph it. I said, "I just want a picture of the tiki!" He said to go ahead and take it--after he left--so I did. I only saw ONE tiki slot machine and it was near the area where you buy tickets for all the events and that big booth that blows around money that people try and collect. Maybe this has been posted here before, but here's my version:

We also hit up three thrift shops and found nothing, but you know how that goes.

I was in Reno the 26-28th of March. Stayed at the Nugget and bought some duplicates of mugs I already have. The peanut mugs were sold from Trader Dick's for a long time and the older molds and glazes are by far superior to the 1980's mugs which look like knock off's.
I hit up 3 thrift stores but didn't have time to hit the St. Vincent's which I noticed at the last minute. Found no tiki mugs but I did score some Lyman, Hawaiian, Tahitian, Samoan, bossa nova and Command Percussion vinyl for 25 cents a record. I have all the mugs pictured so far so my chances of finding anything new in the mug dept. was nil anyway. Got to eat drink and be merry at Trader Dick's which recently shortened the menu. Dammit!! They really need to work on the terrible tunes they play and figure out how to drown out the casino music so you're not listening to two sets of bad music at once.
My father did some work on Harvey's(of Harvey's Lake Tahoe)ranch long ago.
I guess alot of peeps were in Reno last week.

Yep...including Paul McCartney. A friend emailed me this link:

I was in Reno from the 28th - 31st. Just missed you. We went to the Nugget on the 29th.

Did you see the record section in hmmm I think it was the St. Vincent's (which means you didn't). Anyways, one of the thrift shops had a record section with some cool old, stuff on the walls. I was surprised to see it. My brother (who is 10 years older than me) owns a ton of vinyl. Too bad he wasn't there to see it.
