I searched and found info on the Palms Motel, (thanks Woofmutt..) I'm looking for any other groovy 50's style motels. I'm gonna be (maybe) in Portland on June 12 for a fundraiser at an Eagles Hall down there...
http://www.johnnymercury.com/eagles.htm if yer interested... and there may be a few of us that would like to take over a cool motel. Heated pool a plus! Lemme know if anyone has any good info for me. I googeled and searched tikicentral...
Muchas gracias
Pea

I did a website with my brother about the Neon in Vancouver. "City Lights: Vancouver's Neon Heritage" http://collections.ic.gc.ca/neon

I know it's not related to this event(I apologize sweetpea) but if you're interested in Neon you might find it cool!

S

I'll check out the site!
too bad it's not Vancouver WA!
That's mighty close to portland! heehee
But I do come to BC occasionaly, so I'll be sure to check your info out!
YAY!
Thanks much!

Wow,
That Eagles lodge is just up the street. They staged the pdxpolka party there until switching to the Norse hall a couple years ago.
Should be fun!

You probably already know this, but the Palms is practically right across the street from the Alibi... you need go no further.

S

BUELER? BUELER?
you tellin me there's no cool joints to sleep at in P-town?
i don't believe it!...

Hey Sweetpea - sorry I missed you at the crawl, I was getting in on some extreme disco skating booty action, with a very interesting special someone...

Anyway - the googie motels in Portland are for the most part pretty ghetto. But, I'd have to say, if you're not afraid of NE Portland, go ahead and try the Palms. They do a good job of keeping up the sign, so I have reason to believe it's family owned and fairly clean and well-cared for.

If you're looking for a NICE and reasonable place to stay, I'd recommend the Mallory. It's right downtown by Powells, and it supposedly has an old-school swanky ballroom/dining room. Reasonable rates, too.

There's also a cheap motel next to the Jasmine Tree, but I don't recall what it's called. Looks scary, but hey - probably really cheap.

Hope all has been well,

F.

Even if you don't stay at the Mallory, try and go to the Driftwood Room in the hotel. It's a beautiful, completely original mid-century bar/lounge, with no tacky sports posters in sight. Their cocktails are good, strong, and fairly cheap. Highly recommended!

Another option: I've stayed at the Mark Spencer Hotel in Portland twice and loved it. It's a couple of blocks from Powell's, it's on the trolley line, and it has a great rooftop garden where you can enjoy the lights of the city at night. Rates start at $69.

There are plenty of good new restaurants in Portland, but I'm partial to the old joints. For steaks, the Ringside can't be beat for old-style atmosphere, food, and service.

For seafood there's Jake's Famous Crawfish. It's been open since 1892. I was amazed by the list of daily fresh fish and shellfish. Our veteran waiter provided exceptional and friendly service.

Just a couple suggestions of the many good places to eat and drink besides the Alibi and Jasmine Tree. I miss Portland! And I really miss Henry Ford's! :(

And if you're there on a weekday, be sure to check in at Meier & Frank's Georgian Room - one of the last surviving department store restaurants. Home of chandeleirs and ladies who lunch - and the best old-school club sandwich (they use BUTTER!). Mmmmm... Tradition....

I did a quick check for Portland on Roadsidepeek.com & found:

which location Meier and Frnaks??

A friend of mine recommended a place called The Acropolis Steakhouse in Portland for dining. Probably not very googie but it boasts an all nude wait staff. I love the local color and it sounds like something that was on That Wild Wild World of Jane Mansfield flick. Has anyone ever been? I'd love to have a few matchbooks from this place littering my glove compartment.

I have not been, but I heard the Acropolis a sleazy strip club that serves crappy food.

Then again, it might be perfect for mrsmiley!

Tikiwahine, would that page happen to exist with another URL?
