Kon Tiki Zihuatamejo, Mexico ash tray

Pages: 1 3 replies

I picked up a small terra cotta ash tray not too long ago. It's about 3.5 inches in diameter and about 1.75 inches tall. It is marked on one side "Res. Bar Kon-Tiki" and "Zihuatamejo-4-24-71" on the other side.

It's really quite plain with no tikis on it at all. Has anyone seen anything else from this establishment or know of it?

Sporkboy,

I've got this bar glass from the Kon-Tiki floating restaurant in Ensenada. Might be related:

There's a whole thread on Mexican Tiki of Old that you might be interested in:

Just noticed that the Tiki on that glass is ripped of from the Milan Guanko Tikis on the Kapu Kai bowling alley menu cover...
What a cool idea to make a Kon-Tiki restaurant on a giant raft!

Also another thought: There is still a garden sculpture shop in Rosarito Beach that makes concrete Tikis, maybe the maker got his start working with Eli.

Also, when carving all the Tikis for Ren Clark's, Milan Guanko had two Mexican carvers help him...

The ashtray is from a place that's been around a while and is still open in Zihuatanejo. Those numbers are the old phone number. It's still called Kon-Tiki, but it appears to specialize in pizzas these days. Don't know what the decor is like.
