Hey - I thought I'd list my sources for tiki & hawaiiana supplies. Most of them you all have heard of, but some might be new. I'd love to hear some of yours, too. http://www.displaycostume.com/ http://www.mcphee.com/ http://www.orientaltrading.com/ http://www.hawaiigeneralstore.net/ http://www.myriahs.com/ http://www.michaels.com/ Of course, the best buys I've gotten have been from eBay. No link needed. Boy, now that I look at my list, I'm surprised that there's so much here in Seattle. Why no tiki bars? |

As I posted here before ("Shopping Seattle") Hawai'i General Store is a really neat place to visit if you're visiting Seattle (and it's just down the road a mile or 3 from Archie McPhee's). The Tiki selection at Hawai'i General store continues to grow, and last week when I was in there I complimented the manager/owner (?) on that. "Well," she said hesitantly as she was unpacking some plastic palm tree swizzles, "We don't really want our main focus to be Tiki." I didn't tell her that wasn't my point, but instead pointed out that the the Tiki items sell and they probably bring people into the store. She seemed indifferent. I thought her attitude was a little odd. Hawai'i general store has a lot of quality Hawaiian crafts and artwork, but there's plenty of non-Tiki Hawaiian schlock as well, such as plastic palm tree swizzles. Tiki is obvioulsy not their main focus but it blends so well with their other items I can't figure out why they'd be worried about how much Tiki merchandise they sell. |

A "wasteland" it's not, but knowing its former glory (I have some post on Seattle's Tiki past in the regular forum) it's a little frustrating. The best thing about Seattle Tiki-wise is that it's just a short (for us western folk) drive to Portland where there's the Jasmine Tree, the amazing Alibi, and of course maxton's Castaway Cove.
