Puffa Puffa Rice Vintage Tiki Cereal

Pages: 1 21 replies

Check out the story and vintage commercial clip with the Alii making cereal in the raging volcano. It’s the closest thing to tiki cereal I’ve seen.

naugatiki, you knocked loose another childhood memory...When I was a kid my mom babysat this Hawaiian kid nicknamed Puffa Puffa because he liked that cereal so much.

Check out this ad here. Viewable with realplayer. It's a Gas!

I remember that cereal ad on TV when I was just a pup. Now I guess I have to admit being vintage too! I thought it difficult to label my favorite 80's music as "retro", but that "vintage" title... well... OUCH. I guess I can claim my body is vintage but my mind is retro??

Great find on that video clip!!!

Good old-fashioned brown sugar and cane sugar to give you "oceans of energy!".

I had no idea that volcanoes were so instrumental in the manufacturing of cereal!

Did William Christopher (Father Mulcahy on MASH) appear in the color version of the Puffa Puffa Rice commercial? The sure seem pretty similar to me. Even the announcer sounds like Father Mulcahy.

I'm in breakfast trivia hell. Where do you guys dig this stuff up from? Wow! I remember Quisp and Quake, but, not this stuff.

I'm having a mind meltdown. It seems I vaguely remember the cereal - the image of the actual cereal looks very familiar,but..... The minute I saw the back panels with the Banana Splits giveaways, my heart skipped. I was a big Banana Splits fan in the late 60's/70, I so remember those plastic hand-puppets (that were nothing more than a very cheap plastic bag-like slip-on glove, printed on one side with the image. I had them all, as well as the posters pictured. My next door neighbor and I had decorated our "hut" in the back woods with the posters. The more I think about the cereal, the better I remember. Thanks for posting this!

I remember Puffa Puffa Rice well. I could even sing you the jingle long before the commercials surfaced again on the internet. Melted into my memory from when the commercials first aired! :)

They should bring it back.

Have to admit I was a fan of Quisp too. :)

Quisp rocked!

I don't remember this, but the "oceans of energy" is flexing my mind. And I too loved the Banana Splits show.

They are making QUISP again!!! I got it at the grocery store last week, I stopped dead in my tracks, I thought I was hallucinating. The box says they are also selling Quisp merchandise like watches on http://www.quisp.com. I must get one!! By the way I was never sold on that voting campaign in the 70s where the Quaker oats man beat out the Quisp martian and thats why Quisp was discontinued. I was skeptical as a child and remain skeptical today.
Also, Quisp was so fun in the 70s, how could it disappear? Same with tikis. Tiki bars were so cool, how on earth could they have gone out of favor? I ask myself this all the time, but alas, times and tastes change.

Hey at least we can still get Cap't Crunch w/Crunch Berries!!!

I don't see anyone that looks like him in the commercial...but I'd say you're spot on regarding the voiceover.

Stellar! :)

Found this in Taschen's "Krazy Kids' Food!" Wonder if anyone out there has the tiki mask from the back?

The cereal is actually mentioned in a Hawaiian song called "Come My House"..where you go various ethnic homes & they describe what they offer you to eat. At the end, they said if you "come my house, all I have is puffa puffa rice"

Put me in the group who had totally forgotten this cereal. Funny how good it feels to reconnect to a bit of your childhood. (That is, the fun parts of childhood.) "Um, ungawa, Puffa, Puffa, Rice!"
