Tiki Mug Molds

Pages: 1 5 replies

Aloha all!

I am interested in finding out if anyone out there knows how to make a tiki mug? I am an artist and love to sculpt. I have been sketching out some ideas for tiki mugs, and want to carve them into clay. But what I really want to do, is to learn how to make a MOLD for a tiki mug, so I can cast many molds of them over and over again. I have made molds before, but never for a hollowed out object such as a tiki mug.

Does anyone here know how to make such a groovy mold? :)

there are several sites thet sell the casting resin and have pretty good instructions on how to do it
http://www.alumilite.com/howto.cfm This one shows several types of molds

Good luck

There is probably someone in your area that could take your carved clay and make the mold/cast the mugs for you. There are probably a ton of ceramics centers in your area that offer classes at a reasonable rate too. Hit the yellow pages!

Hey! Great ideas everyone! Thanks so much! :)

I can't wait to try this. I have always wanted to design my own mugs. I have quite a few sketches of what I would like to do, but have yet to make one. Does anyone here make their own mugs?

Thank you again for the marvelous ideas and links! Im going to explore every single one! :D

I make mugs. I have a friend who makes molds and swears by plasticine. I use clay just fine.

This is a good book for the actual mold part of the process http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1579900224/qid=1087944576/sr=8-3/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i3_xgl14/104-2495668-2057550?v=glance&s=books&n=507846

it's called The Clay Lover's Guide to Making Molds: Designing, Making, Using
by Peirce Clayton

Or you could check around your area for someone who does this.. I personally hate making molds. My work style is too carefree. Once the mold is made, the hard part is over, though.

Good luck.
