The Mai-Kai begins seating at 5:30 for the 7:00 pm show. If you don't have a reserved table (which may not be possible for a group this size), it's first come first seated.
Once you are seated, you can order drinks and dinner before the show, or wander back into the Molokai for a drink.
For those that have never been, please remember that this is a HUGE restaurant. I think they told me they can seat up to 500 at a time (although I have never seen it that full). This is why they try to process as many dinner and drink orders as soon as possible. That way they are not serving dinners during the show.
The size of this operation is the biggest virtue of them opening early for us. By showing up early you'll have time to explore the gardens, the restaurant and the gift shop and order a drink before being seated. If you are trying to do all these things after being seated, you'll disrupt their serving pattern and create hassles for them.
Lastly, let me strees that the Mai Kai is a class act. When you drive in you are greeted by the valet. When you walk through the door, you are greeted and asked if you have reservations. The bar service (and bar maids) are excellent. The restrooms are attended.
When calling and making reservations be patient and ask questions. They are very friendly, but tend to assume everyone is an old customer and knows the drill.
Hope this is helpful to everyone.
