Further, if memory serves, the Kahiki building was on a register of historic buildings (I don't recall which one), and Walgreens has a company policy of not altering or demolishing buildings on this historic register, but they decided to make an exception in this case because they didn't think the building was deserving of the recognition. Like stated above, the sad tale has many players, and each one was simply looking out for their own best interests, but it's left a sour taste in a lot of people's mouths.

There is much love for the Hala Kahiki here, and it's much deserved -- the ambience in that place is amazing!
