I use photos as reference for portraits just as you would with a roll of canvas, a sheet of paper, and all of the romantic trappings of traditional techniques. I just choose to work this way and it works for me just as your techniques work for you but please don't have any assumptions that it is any easier or less of an art if it not created "traditionally". I have enough canvasses, gouache, acrylic, oil paintings and charcoal drawings lying around my studio to attest that I am a "real" artist. Yes, I do work in a traditional studio.
