Gulfcoast Gasser,

Does '60's mean you want a Danish Teak Modern look?
Or does that mean the "bar on the wall cabinet" '60's idea with a tiki look.
Do you want more atomic retro feel or tiki-hut modern?
Is there a wood you would prefer to use?
Does it need to scream Tiki from the wall, or does it need to be discrete and yell "Tiki!" when it is open?

I have a couple ideas for you and I've used the free 3d modeling program called SketchUp from Google to design a few things out of wood before building them, and it visualizes great (I prefer it to Autocad for 3d sketching.) I designed the spice rack and cup holder for the kitchen in my last house this way.
It can export 2d jpeg screenshots of stuff.

Post some dimensions your dream cabinet can't be larger than or deeper than.
Do you want a fold down shelf?
What does it need to store inside it at a mininum, and what would it be nice to store?

What you got in the way of tools?

Table saw, drill/drill press, palm sander, biscuit joiner, dovetail joiner?
Full shop or just a screwdriver?

How simple or complex can this cabinet be and not be over your woodworking skills?

Sounds like it needs to be fairly sturdy and movable.

Should it lock?

Maybe repurpose or modify a fire hose cabinet http://marfabmetal.com/surface.html into a RatRod Tiki style?
