Liquor Cabinet Ideas

Pages: 1 6 replies

I am searching for ideas for a 60's style liquor cabinet / bar. I want to build something to house a few bottles of liquor and some glasses, but have tiki or tropical syle.
Has any one built something this before?

I like this cabinet that is currently on ebay, but not tropical enough!

I'd get one of those bars that hangs on the wall and looks like a picture frame. Change the frame to bamboo and put a tiki print in the frame.

Kind of like this shag one that was done, but make it tiki.

This is something I've been planning on doing, but I've been too lazy...

you may enjoy these custom metal tiki ones from speedcult...they will also custom build one according to your design.

also check out the liquor racks/shelves....

Do you rent or own?
Do you need to be able to take it down and move it?

If you own (and there are no wires, gas pipes, flue, etc in the wall) you can try a between the stud cabinet.
Perhaps a tweak of this idea http://www.rd.com/17518/article17518.html

Consider tikifing a medicine cabinet.

Do you want a drop/fold down table surface for mixology magic?

You can surface a cool cabinet like the previous post with a cool tiki print with tropical frame http://www.pictureframes.com/scripts/WebObjects/PictureFrames.woa/wa/CustomCollection?sec=Bamboo&sku=BAL8

I can mock up something in SketchUp if you send dimensions and ideas.

I like the idea of converting (subverting?) objects to a different use (still have plans for turning some old four-burner stove into a DJing unit with turntables for the hotplates) and recently have been looking into those 50's stereo units with the record-players that pop out when opening a door and the radio that comes up with the other drop-down door. I can imagine having a blast converting an old trashed unit - usually they go for 40-50 in local thrifts...

Great ideas - but I really wanted something made of wood and made by me.
I have also looked at old TV/stero cabinets but they are always so large.

The reason I want it transportable is becuse as my wife's decorating whims change I may need to easily remove or relocate my mini-bar! :)

Gulfcoast Gasser,

Does '60's mean you want a Danish Teak Modern look?
Or does that mean the "bar on the wall cabinet" '60's idea with a tiki look.
Do you want more atomic retro feel or tiki-hut modern?
Is there a wood you would prefer to use?
Does it need to scream Tiki from the wall, or does it need to be discrete and yell "Tiki!" when it is open?

I have a couple ideas for you and I've used the free 3d modeling program called SketchUp from Google to design a few things out of wood before building them, and it visualizes great (I prefer it to Autocad for 3d sketching.) I designed the spice rack and cup holder for the kitchen in my last house this way.
It can export 2d jpeg screenshots of stuff.

Post some dimensions your dream cabinet can't be larger than or deeper than.
Do you want a fold down shelf?
What does it need to store inside it at a mininum, and what would it be nice to store?

What you got in the way of tools?

Table saw, drill/drill press, palm sander, biscuit joiner, dovetail joiner?
Full shop or just a screwdriver?

How simple or complex can this cabinet be and not be over your woodworking skills?

Sounds like it needs to be fairly sturdy and movable.

Should it lock?

Maybe repurpose or modify a fire hose cabinet http://marfabmetal.com/surface.html into a RatRod Tiki style?
