I thought a common archeological theory on Rapa Nui was that they chopped down and used up all the trees on the island (to use for rollers to move moai). You chop down all your trees, you're going to accelerate erosion. There's a place outside of Lumpkin called Providence Canyon where poor farming & soil management led to 150' deep canyons in 50 years.
