This is an excellent opportunity to encourage anyone that might not be familiar with The Easter Island Statue Project to investigate it further. Dr. Van Tilburg has dedicated her life to studying this magical place and its monuments.

It's a fascinating discovery...if erosion is the reason for them getting buried..I don't know, that seems strange that they would be buried THAT deep, but I'm no archeologist..:)

Yeah, I had a similar thought... THAT MUCH erosion? Plenty of time has passed, so I can imagine that happening, but she didn't elaborate. Makes ya kind of think though - before all that erosion it was a much "pointier" world at one time! Now that's something I think I'll mull over with a good zombie in one hand... :wink:

I thought a common archeological theory on Rapa Nui was that they chopped down and used up all the trees on the island (to use for rollers to move moai). You chop down all your trees, you're going to accelerate erosion. There's a place outside of Lumpkin called Providence Canyon where poor farming & soil management led to 150' deep canyons in 50 years.

Perhaps it was all the dust settling when the lost continent of Mu...Lemuria...MuMu Land...suddenly slipped beneath the waves...:)
