This is an excellent opportunity to encourage anyone that might not be familiar with The Easter Island Statue Project to investigate it further. Dr. Van Tilburg has dedicated her life to studying this magical place and its monuments.

And, to see photos of the first documented excavations of the Moai (the above photo is from Heyerdahl's 1989 Easter Island: The Mystery Solved) and read more about the entire expedition, see Heyerdahl's Aku Aku of 1958.

Some new heads got buried....

http://news.search.yahoo.com/search/news?p=Steve+Croquett%27s+%22Heads+Up%22&ei=UTF-8&fr=&fr2=newsdd

"The rusty steel monoliths of Steve Croquett's 'Heads Up' dominate Tamarama Beach during the 15th annual Sculpture By The Sea exhibition in Sydney. Works by over 100 artists from around the world are on display along the sandstone cliffs of the Pacific coast until November 20."

Nice place to put them!

Reminds me of this:

Re full-sized carvings of Moai:

I have always loved this photo from the golden days of tourist art:

Thor Heyerdahl's wife Yvonne unpacking souvenirs from their journeys together.

Dr. Terry Hunt outta University of Hawai'i at Manoa is pretty much the man when it comes to Rapa Nui archaeology. He just published a new book on island

herr's some more photos of Moai Excavations!

This thread is pure awesomeness!

Thanks also to BigBroTiki!

This nugget gave me hope that De-evolution is not without its counter agents.

Mahalo!

This video on MSNBC just came out and is dated 6/13/2012. It features a relatively short interview with one of the archaeologists involved with excavations on the island.

It's a fascinating discovery...if erosion is the reason for them getting buried..I don't know, that seems strange that they would be buried THAT deep, but I'm no archeologist..:)

Yeah, I had a similar thought... THAT MUCH erosion? Plenty of time has passed, so I can imagine that happening, but she didn't elaborate. Makes ya kind of think though - before all that erosion it was a much "pointier" world at one time! Now that's something I think I'll mull over with a good zombie in one hand...

I thought a common archeological theory on Rapa Nui was that they chopped down and used up all the trees on the island (to use for rollers to move moai). You chop down all your trees, you're going to accelerate erosion. There's a place outside of Lumpkin called Providence Canyon where poor farming & soil management led to 150' deep canyons in 50 years.

Perhaps it was all the dust settling when the lost continent of Mu...Lemuria...MuMu Land...suddenly slipped beneath the waves...:)

This article appeared in the Los Angeles Times today:

Easter Island has stone heads, but little else. What happened?

This photo..

Reminds me of the 1959 news wire photo I have with Thor Heyerdahl perched atop the Easter Island Moai.
