Those craft drinks with just one rum are a whole different story. I think that Mariano knew very well that he needed to use nondescript base rums that didn't compete with the Appleton, Dagger, Lemon Hart and other rums that added the flavor. Back in the day, Bacardi and other cheap Caribbean rums may have served that role. Today, it's Ron Carlos. That fact that it's cheap and helps the bottom line is a bonus, but probably just as essential.
