It acts as a gateway for those who have not yet had complex and multi-layered cocktails which we all have come to know and love. It also helps dispel the bad image which "tiki" or "tropical" drinks have in the minds of many. But wait, there's more -- it also allows you to educate your friends/family/etc. on the virtues of using good and fresh ingredients. To follow up on the Mai-Tai, and to begin building a basic bar repertoire, you may consider adding the fairly easy yet also generally well-loved Pusser's Painkiller.
