Care and feeding of my tiki. Advice desperately needed

Have a tiki made by Bula Bula here in Florida in December of 2001. Sits outside by the pool on a circular brick. Fastened to the ground by a pole which is sunk about three feet down into the planet.

I have never done anything to the tiki since it always looked in fine shape. Tonight however, I noticed a small (1.5") hole in the top. I put my finger in and the center of the hole just crumbled away. So, I began tapping my tiki and it sounds suspiciously hollow to me. Used to be a solid 300lb monster. Now, I'm not so sure.

Anyone ever heard of this? Is there hope at preservation? Any advice would be sincerely appreciated.

Sound like the rot, remove any source of moisture, sprinklers or pool water ect. There is a product made from boric acid that fights termites and rot without creating a toxic waste site. Its safe enough for you to apply yourself. http://www.doyourownpestcontrol.com/spec/pick-boracare1.htm

Are you going to believe that coming from a guy named Toxic?

Rot. The ground and that pole created areas where water got in and could not dry and you got rot. Ideally, you would mount your tiki a little off the ground so air can circulate under it and make the fasteners either water tight or such that air flows around them. An open metal grate mounted off thee ground a couple of inchees with lag bolts might work, or just a free standing tiki.

Thanks guys for the quick reply. I'll try the Boracare stuff and get it off the ground some.

There is good news in all of this...now that it is hollow, it'll be a lot easier to move around! :)

Thanks again!

if you're going to keep it outside, I'd seal the top to keep any more moisture out. maybe wax.

You might also get some Minwax rot fixer stuff. What the heck is it called? I have two bottles of it. It's absorbed by rotting wood and it makes it hard again.
