I don't have any tiki to show, because I haven't made any yet.But I will be starting one soon. Here's a canoe shaped bowl and some masks that I am trying to finish. Also a rattle made of a Yew burl.
The bowl is the first of a series that i want to do
You can see that the tools I use are mainly straight knives, crooked knives, and adzes.
Looking at the fine work in here has really inspired me to do some oceanic inspired stuff.I hope to learn from you tiki people.
I have been scrounging for a supply of wood and racking my brain to figure out how to get some cash for tools.
I'm hitting the interlibrary loan for books on Pacific art for ideas
For bowls and masks,it's hard to beat fresh western red alder.A 15" round can be split to make 2 blanks.
I can't figure out how to make these images appear in the post. How can you add the bb code? Sorry, but these just come up as postage stamp sized pictures

Cool, I like the abalone inlaid eyes on the mask.

very nice stuff and what a great collection of tools on the bench.
For posting your pics change the [url] to [img]

Very nice work, Eric. If you look inside the cover of the Book of Tiki (BOT), you will see Alaskan tikis represented there as well as all of the other cultures who have created so-called primitive art. You're just working your way south. I think I can safely say we're all looking forward to your foray into Oceanic styles.

Eric, REALLY Nice work. Using the primitive tools actually is better some times. Those Ancient carvers taulored their art to fit their tools for sure. It must be very satisfying to be able to create pieces like these using the same tools they did hundreds of years ago.
Welcome to TC, I think we have the perfect spot for you, so get comfortable and stay awhile

Welcome Eric. Indeed you have an impressive tool collection, and are producing some great work. Keep posting lots of pics. How did you inlay your shells?

Thanks for the kind words and aloha. It means alot to me,especially coming from you guys. These are the only type of carving tools I have used except for chainsaw, drill press and grinders. If anyone is interested in getting some,Kestrel Tool is available online. But you better hurry, because He is retiring in 3 months and they won't be making them anymore. They also have classes every year with world class carvers teaching them.I just bought the blades and made the handles. They are a joy to use.The next one I want is the lip adze. That thing can really move some wood! And neatly.
I just cut the abalone on a cheapo tile saw.I want to put a lapidary blade in it,so there is more grit on the side of the blade for shaping.
The first tiki I want to do is the god Maui.He seems to have been very busy pulling islands out of the sea including Hawaii,Tahiti, and Aeoteoroa. This is a picture of a Maui that I bought from a Tongan carver who paddled up to my boat on an outrigger canoe years ago.
It may be silly, but I would Never go to sea without that carving.
I need to do some research before I do some preliminary scetches, so if anyone has any images, legends,or leads where I can find out more about Maui, please lay it on me.
Is the book of tiki something online?
I'm sorry, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to change url to img.
Benzart,I just looked at that Lono carving you did,and it is really amazing!
You must've made quite a pile of woodchips over the years to get that good.
I have only had time to go through a small portion of the posts here, but the work you people are doing is very inspiring

Here's the one I'm working on tonite. It's a west coast style portrait mask.
Northern style masks are much more anatomicly correct, where west coast and southern masks are much more abstract. It's a real challenge for me,but you seem to learn the most by hard stuff
I'm trying to take some of the design elements from this beautiful mask by Loren White.
His is female and the one I"m attempting will be male.
I kind of wrecked it by going too deep on the brow and too small on the nose, but by going deeper I think I can save it.

If I could have just one adze,I would pick the sitka straight adze.
I use that one most
