Some of us (including myself) showed hesitation to chop at PIFA. The following is a response to an email I sent to a friend of mine who dances in one of the hula troupes that have performed at PIFA in the past. She is also of Island descent. She says:

"I definitely think you should do the Tiki Carving at PIFA.  Especially since it was a request..  You know what I mean.  The Pacific Islanders will have nothing but respect for your craft.  I know from experience that although you may not be of Hawaiian ancestry.. if the Aloha spirit and the love for anything Hawaiian (such as hula or tiki carving) exists.. then you are welcomed with Open Arms..."
 
"So have no shame.. Share your gift with pride.. Especially since you actually take the time to do research and try to make your Tiki's with meaning.. and not just because it looks good."

I'm attaching a tightly strung bungie cord to a fence on the back side of the park. It'll be hooked over a quick-release winch. If anybody tries to break my legs, just hit the lock bar and SPROOOIIING I'll get yanked 75 yards away in 1 3/5 seconds.

Actually, it was a slow, fun, Aloha Baby style event last year. Everybody plops down a big blanket in front of the stage and has a two day picnic while watching hula girls from all over So Cal. Easy going ain't the word for it.

This almost brings a tear to the eye, man. If I wasn't convinced before(I was all over this the second I heard of it) this would do it for me as well. I went to the PIFA website and there are some Haoles in the dance troupes as well. No worries, man.........aloha spirit, brah!

As for the Wildebeest post, I wasn't understanding the last two posts by Kate and Buzzy, so I thought I'd throw some random shit out there myself. Wildebeest are quite an interesting creature. I spared you their method of marking, though. That was nasty and sort of reminded me of what those guys were doing in our last chop thread......a nasty display of marking with feces and what not.

As for the safety issues, I think apprenticeships are a great way to spread proper working methods. We should all get together for a safety meeting and maybe agree on a few guidelines, then pass these things along to our newbies. At my first chop, everyone was SO helpful, I was sort of shocked, but we are getting bigger and the personal touch that a small group allows may wain. Sounds like we're really moving towards better organization and it's better that we do before someone gets hurt. Hell, one major accident could totally end us, if we weren't careful. Maybe newbies should even sign waivers.......when I was teaching swing lessons, I wouldn't even put on my dancing shoes unless the students had signed one. Gotts to protect ourselves, man. There are a lot of stupid people out there who think that everyone else should pay for their stupidity.......instead of feeding them to the polar bears, like we oughta!!

Good idea. I'll stop by Costco this week and get a flat of bottled water-- nothing, and I mean nothing was better at Oasis after just 30 minutes than some ice cold water. I mean, damn, it was hot!

Mieko, you may have the recipe, but I refuse to post it. I simplified it from the Tortuga recipe and it actually turned out WAY better than the first one I tried. If I remember, I'll bring you a hard copy, or I'll Email it to you. Thank you for liking my rum cake....maybe I WILL make two. I am VERY happy that you all are my friends!!!!

I grew up next door to a German bakery from age 1-9 and lived off whipped cream puff cakes carved into little swans, cherry tarts with lattice-lace tops, and chocolate creams that still outdo anything at the fanciest shops.

At Christmas the guy would make giant gingerbread houses and RUM CAKES. The cakes were so drenched in rum that I couldn't actually eat them, but the adults seemed to enjoy 'em over anything else.

So dude, I want some.

FUNNY story, if you're the SOB that did it, but I was up late, carving on my porch last night and heard a knock on the gate. I opened it up and I was being drawn down on by the Chula Vista PD.........one of my neighbors decided to call the police and tell them that I was drunk and armed on my porch. Not cool. I came walking out of my gate with my mallet and a chisel in my hand and almost got shot. I hate this place, man. Condos are for CHUMPS!!

Zaya's cousin, Erin(No tiki name yet), from Santa Barbara is coming down for the chop at Wheeler's. He's carved a small tiki with a dremel tool recently and has a log ready to go at home after he checks out some of our fancy tools and sees what he needs. He heard about how much fun this whole tiki carving thing was and thought he'd give it a shot. Another log junkie will be born...

Also, there was a green folding chair in a bag left at the oasis chop that I'll bring on saturday.

sorry but my pops and i wont be able to make the chop. my house was broken into today while my wife and daughter were out having lunch. the police caught one of the perps but one got away they had our street blocked off for 5 hrs apparently they were armed. my wife's a little freaked out so were staying in this weekend. hope the chop goes well. maybe ill see you guys on the 22nd.

Looks like I have just too much work here today to make it to the Chop.

HEY! You guys got a lot of work done!!! And you look so happy! Happy campers!

Wheeler's looks GREAT. Buzzy's seems to have shrunk considerably over the course of the day.

Here are 5 Okis glazed with 3 coats per. You have to do these on a dry sunny warm day, I don't know how the heck people do it in the winter. You have to let the coats dry before doing the next one.

The ones to the left are totally dry, the ones to the right (darker green means still wet) are still moist. You do them in a line, then go back to the start, and go over the line again. It's not exactly the most exciting thing I've ever done.
