Favorite drink- Jack Manhattan with bitters (many don't add the bitters automatically)

Favorite place to drink it- Magic Castle, Hollywood, it's my favorite night out, plus, you get to dress up-flashback to old Hollywood!

I also love a cold Coors Light on a hot summer afternoon while floating in the pool or at the nude beach (it really dosen't get much better than that)

Sorry, I'm not much of a fru-fru cocktail drinker and they aren't tiki places. As far as that goes, a bowl of something at Bahooka (we close our eyes and point to a drink on the back to order for our bowl)

My favorite drink is whatever tastes good at the moment.

My favorite place to drink is where ever all my TC friends are - the more the merrier!

I have always liked the Blue Hawaiian. I think it reminds me of all the blue slurpees I used to drink in my youth. There's just something incredibly exotic about drinking a BLUE beverage. I don't know why????

I usually like making them at home because the consistency in flavor from restaurant to bar can vary a great deal.

Activities, I like any venue that has stuff to do. Darts, Shuffleboard, Extreme sports videos on TV. Anything besides sitting there and doing nothing.

The Islands hamburger chain in California is almost a perfect hangout for me. The tiki decor is in full swing, they have fruity drinks on the menu and extreme video playing all day. My wife has come to expect that I will watch TV the entire time we are there and I won't say much of anything until we leave.

Bong and I have been drinkin' the Trader Vic's Grog after every practice lately. Those are pretty good.

I also love cold coors lights at nude beaches. Preferably, the one that Laney's at.

I really love a good Sidecar. Or the variant known as Between The Sheets. And the old-fashioned Mai Tais at Trader Vic's.

Sidecar is: 1 oz brandy, 1/2 oz Cointreau, 1/2 oz lemon juice. Shake w/ice, strain into cocktail glass with sugared rim.

Between The Sheets: 3/4 oz. each of Rum, Brandy, and Cointreau, and a splash of lemon juice. Same process, but you can skip the sugar.

I also must agree with Laney that there's nothing like a really good Manhattan, basically. Likewise a good Suffering Bastard is an unparalleled experience, but I've hardly ever HAD one. 8(

Why do I like these drinks? They taste great and they get me schnockered.

Away from Vallejo, I favor the Tiki Ti; runners up would include Musso and Frank's, The Tonga Room, The Alley Cat in Oakland, and the Alibi in Portland. I would have included the Mel-O-Dee in El Cerrito, but they took out the dancing and substituted a pool table, so I am no longer as fond. :P

In Vallejo, I recommend The Golden Bubble and the Valano Club.

What do I like to do while drinking? Um, socialize. A good drunken conversation is SO much fun.

Oh, rum, probably, preferably dark, although sometimes too much gets a little cloying and I begin to crave something simpler and less sweet like vodka.

Bailey's has a special place in my heart, though.

There was a bar in Seattle years ago called Jake O'Shaughnesseys that made a drink called a 'Cruzan for a Bruisin' which basically consisted of Cruzan 120 proof rum, pineapple and orange juice and Myers' floated on top.

Yum a dum dum.

Without question my favorite cocktail has got to be the original Trader Vic's Mai Tai -either at home or at Honolulu in Northern VA whenever I get a chance to go. The secret ingredient is fresh lime juice - I've tried it numerous times with the little squirt bottle of lime juice and recently the Key Lime juice in a bottle - they both don't do the drink justice. My other favorite cocktail is a straight-up super cold gin martini but they are only on rare occasions!
Beer wise I'm totally gung-ho on Yuengling lager! I love the stuff!

But I will restate because the world should know about the GREATEST Prohibtion Era Drink ever invented:

"THE FRENCH 75"
2 oz. dry gin
1 teaspoon powdered sugar
juice of half lemon
champagne
Shake well with ice. Strain into tall glass with fresh ice. Top with champagne. Get more Tylenol.

Ignore the Modern, pussified versions with Cointreau or sour mix. This drink needs GIN!! (preferably bad gin)

Second choice is:

"Americano"
In a highball glass full of ice add:
Campari 3 parts
Italian Vermouth 1 part
Serve club soda on the side

Of course nothing beats a good, dirty Martini

Time & place is of crucial importance when enjoying a good drink, and as a result, I don't stick to any particular favorite. I'm always game to try to the local speciality as it tends to increase your appreciation of wherever you happen to be & also usually works out to be one of the cheaper options. For example, while visiting old pubs and alehouses in the UK, I'll always try their local bitter (dark beer)as the range in tastes is amazing.

At the risk of sounding Squawkeresque, here's a few favourite situations and their
appropriate tipples:
Glastonbury Festival - Hot mulled cider (Cider contains a lot of alcohol in the UK)
A brutally hot day away from the sea -Campari & soda
A brutally hot day near the sea - Cold lager from an icebox
Watching boat races on the River Thames in the summer - Pimms served in pint glasses
Anyplace who really knows how to make an exceptional martini - a martini
Any old Oxford pub near Christmas - mulled wine/port/or dark rum with ginger wine
Sitting on my doorstep on a sunny day after work - Anything from the Grog Log served
in a Tiki mug

The list could go on & on

As far as drinking beer at nude beaches go, I particularly enjoyed being served Mythos beer accompanied by a variety of mezedes (Greek snacks) & a frozen glass to pour it into, while laying in a hammock next to the nude (if you so wish) beach on the Greek Island of Ios. Not bad for about $2 per brewski. I must stress that I kept my personal nudity well away from the hammock itself, and only got the old 'meat and two veg' out in the stipulated nude areas.

I agree there is the appropriate drink for every occasion/mood/activity/movie, but in general:
while laying in the sun: mai tai
to celebrate friday night end of work week Henrita: put a shot of margarita mix in a tall shot glass, put in one cube of ice, fill with cazaderos herradura
while at a nice restaurant: grey goose martini
over dessert: bonny doon framboise - chaucer
while deep sea fishing, or to sober up: icy icy coors light
just for fun: pimm's cup
while watching any "thin man" movies: bushmills on the rocks
while entertaining in: my infused rums or vodkas, shaken with ice, in a martini glass

fave place to drink:
present: TV, tonga, bamboo island, on a ferry to alcatraz, the piano bar at the portland hilton, portland's crystal ballroom, SF's rainforest cafe (downstairs)
past: salem's tahiti, kokomo's in vegas (both now closed or in renovation)

fave thing to do while drinking:
all I can say is: strip trivial pursuit (or does it start out as a drinking game?); anything else is too risque to mention here.
oh, I guess watching a sunset is good too, esp if there's a green flash.

I agree with Woody that it depends on the place and my mood.

The best Mai Tais I ever had were the ones we made with Trader Vic's Mai Tai mix, Myers' and fresh lime and enjoyed while sitting on our little patio overlooking the ocean at the Tiki Hotel in Kona on the big island.

My favorite drink also changes on a regular basis. My favorite tropical drink right now is the Puka Punch from "Intoxica" (via the Tiki Ti) because it's so complex, it's well balanced between sweet and tart, it's strong, and it has that exotic (for lack of a better word) flavor from all the different rums and flavorings in it.

My recent favorite cocktail is the Pegu Club Cocktail, that originated outside Rangoon (in Burma) in the 20s. Good during the coktail hour before dinner.

1.5 oz. gin
.5 oz. Cointreau
.5 oz. lime juice
2 or 3 dashes Angostura bitters
Shake with cracked ice and strain into cocktail glass.

I was completely unaware of any similar post. Soory about that!

Zombie (made hot)
Scooby Snack

Cold shots of Tuaca

Fav at home drinks:

Rum and whatever mixer I can find
Tequilla shots, or straight from the bottle
Any flavor vodka and any mixer

Fav Place to drink:

Casino bars, so I can play black jack not loose a dime but get free drinks all night long.

Places Im banned from:

Peppermill Casino bars
Foleys bar

Fav drinking atmosphere:

Low light, unfamilar faces..cushy booths...like a vacation for your ass.
And allthough I like low light, I do love fish bars. Where they have fish tanks in the walls like at Traders and at the peppermill.

A bartender friend of mine was able to get white Myers' rum for me. A good alternative to Appleton as they're both from Jamaica. A Jamaican white I've found in some liquor stores is Wray and Nephew overproof rum, but it's stronger.

This doesn't make sense - all of these hardcore drinkers on Tiki Central and the general consensus of favorite beer is Coors Light? Coors Light??? You might as well go with drinking a Perrier! :wink:

Favorite Place To Drink: In my basement Tiki Bar with Dick Dale on the stereo. Mrs. Kahuna and I are new parents, so we really don't go out much anymore. When we did, though, we kept our drink orders simple. (Most bartenders in this jerk-water berg have enough trouble mixing a decent "gin & tonic" or "Jack & Coke". I shudder to think of what vile concoction I'd be served after ordering a Zombie.)

Hilarious article! I never saw that one before.

A couple mistakes in it. He says that the Mai Tai at the Windows on the World was made with Myers' and then says that a Mai Tai should be made with Jamaican rum. Myers' is from Jamaica. Later he says that the excellent Grog Log recipe calls for Lemon Hart Jamaican rum when in fact Lemon Hart is from Guyana. Then he asks why some folks float Demarara rum from Guyana in a Mai Tai when it should only contain Jamaican and Martinique rums.

I know I'm being a perfectionist but I don't want people to get confused about which rums come from Jamaica.

Actually, Lemon Hart isn't / wasn't just demerara. There was a Lemon Hart Jamaican gold rum, which the Grog Log talks about and which used to be sold here but is no longer available. In fact, I cleaned out the last bottles of it at Lanai Liquors a couple years ago (they must've been on the shelf for many moons). I think I gave one bottle to mrsmiley the first time I went to a party at Chez UGH. You can sample from my last bottle next time you visit Belmont.

I think a certain weirduncle here has some pimento liqueur, given his knowledge of the secret booze wholesaler handshakes.

My cousin recently went to Martinique. Whenever he goes down to the Caribbean I ask him to look for Pimento Liqueur and "real" Fallernum (the slightly alcoholic kind). He didn't find any, and he didn't find anyone who had ever heard of them. When on Oahu last year I was looking for a bottle of Okolehao, no one had heard of it. This year I found a bottle at a fancy liquor store in Honolulu. Oke is a distillate of the Ti plant. This Oke is made from whiskey and Ti root. Does it stack up to the real thing? I don't know I've never tried the real thing.

After having received blank stares from liquor store clerks for years when asking for "Pimento Liqueur" (or being shown the martini olives), I finally decided to call some Jamaican food stores. I found one in Oakland that knew exactly what I was talking about. He said "you got to go to Jamaica for that mon!"

I was somewhat surprised at Mondo Tiki that the winner of the bikini contest won a trip to Jamaica (and that few entered that contest) while the ugly Aloha shirt contest winner just won a Shag decanter set. Talk about discrimination!

Y'know, I've never understood the PBR fad. I guess it's a backlash from when craft brewing started sounding too snooty. Pabst is mediocre beer at best. I like it when I'm too poor to drink anything else, but the price is the only thing that makes it palatable. It's less crappy than comparably priced beer - guess that's not a very catchy ad campaign, though... Personally, having BEEN working class, I don't get the desire of educated, well-off folks to PRETEND they're working class. Being a wage-slave sucks, why would you pretend otherwise?

My rant about the PBR thing was knee jerk as it's something that's been nagging at me for awhile. Still, it IS better than Coors Light! Cheaper too, but that's the part I don't understand - why all the hype about basically saying "Pabst: it's all I can afford!". Now THERE'S a catchy ad campaign...

No luck. I forget the details, but I think they said they'd wait for more orders, and they would've done it if I could've ordered a case. I also tried some bay area superstore liquor joints with websites claiming that they'll order anything for you, but more deadends. I could've sworn someone here or on the old yahoo group once talked about buying the little allspice / pimento balls and making their own.

Now this is thread that is right up my alley. Here's a few favs:

• Ice Cold Gin Martini straight-up with a twist (Plymouth's or Boodle's please) @ the Vong Bar in HK (although not lately, it's tough to drink 'em through those SARS mask)

• Gin and Tonic @ Harvey Nick's Fifth Floor in London (a bit tourista, but its a good place to start things off)

• Mojito @ the Ghostbar in LV. Great atmosphere, excellent view - even when looking outside.

• Manhattan (Makers Mark please) @ Whiskey Park, Monkey Bar, Bull & Bear, or any of a dozen other haunts in Midtown.

• Ice Cold Old Style in a plastic cup @ Wrigley Field, Left Field Bleachers, Sunny day with the wind blowing out

• Caipirinha's wheeled to you on a little trolley, accompanied by mountains of meat at Churrascaria Plataforma in NYC (49th btwn 8th and 9th)

• Singapore Sling (before they started making them in oil tanker quanity and shot them out of a gun) accompanied by peanuts and satay @ The Long Bar in Singapore

• Hurricanes in the courtyard @ Pat O'Brien's in New Orleans (tip: beware the Mint Juleps)

And last, but certainly not least:

• The fabulous Mai Tai, made fresh and served beach or poolside just about anywhere in Hawaii (although I have had a few bad experiences when I've been in "let's-find-the-cheapest-Mai-Tai!" adventures with buddies).

When I'm at the Bigfoot Lodge, I always drink Pabst on tap -- it's far more drinkable than most mass-produced domestic beers.

Regarding PBR and lager in general: I love it ice cold on a hot day. Since hot days are fairly scarce around here (Oakland) I usually order a British ale such as Fuller's or Young's or a German or Beligian beer. Personally I find most American microbrew beer overrated. Most are not as well balanced as European beer. They've had hundreds of years of practice and they have it down cold (or lukewarm if you prefer). I envy Trader Woody for being able to go into a pub every day for a pint of bitter!

Not at all! To be honest though, that's the only way to serve your most popular domestic lager-style brews. If you served them 'warm' (room temperature or actually a little lower in reality) like our British bitter, you'd just taste unpleasant chemicals.

I actually like the way Australians drink their beer - from stubbies. Like the US, there's a need to drink the beer cold, so they drink from tiny little bottles. A couple of gulps and it's gone. When you need another, just grab one from the ice-box and it's cold and fresh. Out in the blazing heat of the Australian Outback, I'd rather have a couple of cold stubbies than a pint of British beer, any day!

According to Consumer Reports PBR was one of their highest rated beers according to taste. I also have to say that Miller High Life in the glass bottles is also a damn good beer! Trader Woody - what you refer to as stubbies are often referred to as ponies here in the states! There's a beer from Latrobe Pennsylvania called Rolling Rock that is readily available in the small 7 ounce bottles! I don't drink Rolling Rock all the time but on those 100 degree days in the middle of the summer, after you get finished mowing the grass, they taste unbelievable!

Okay, now you guys got me going, I'm going to have to try a PBR ice cold and do a taste test, hey maybe it is a good beer. It just seems to have been forgotten, I never ever see anyone drinking it. But I also don't live in the Great Northwest. The Beer Hunters, eh hoser?

Actually, I have tried the Double Chocolate Stout. It is available here at Trader Joe's. When I first saw it I thought, "Yuck! Chocolate Beer!" But I finally tried it and it is quite good. It doesn't taste like like chocolate beer at all, just a good, dark, flavorfull stout. Recommended!

Nobody caught it, it's not PBR, it's Hamn's with the "Land of Sky Blue Water" slogan. Washington State? Great Northwest? PBR is from Milwaukee. Some of you might like it, not me.
