Huh?! Just because you were built in the 50s doesn't mean you need to serve drinks like it's the 50s. (yeah, I know the servers aren't real progressive either)

Question for the women of Tiki Central: Would you rather have a $3 chardonnay or half off a Barrel O Rum?

I say "Ain't no broad buyin' me a drink!!" That just ain't right, especially if I can get the drinks for half.

So, a few years ago a couple dumb asses sued the bars here in town because of discrimination. They thought it was unfair that there was a "Ladies night" at the clubs and no men's night. That means ladies got in for free and men had to pay. Whaaaa!!!

For a long while it was "sword fights nightly!" Then the guys actually stopped going and many bars were sold or shut due to poor attendance.

First, VODKA mai tai?!?!?!?

Second, the whole reason bars started having Ladies Nights was because the male to female ration was usually 4|5:1. I'd think guys would be grateful that the bars were trying to encourage females to show up.

The Mai Kai offers most of their drinks with a Vodka alternative, all you gotta do is ask.

No matter how they advertise, just visit the place. You can still order anything on the menu. Just visit often and enjoy the place.

1/2 off means 2 for one.

And that's the only math I'm good at.

One would think that those guys would have thought of that. I hope the Mai Kai has thought of the ramifications. This is a litigious society.

The intent may be to reach out to the nearby public who may not already be familiar with tiki drinks, or think of the Mai Kai only as the place with a live stage show, to be visited only for special ocassions. Offering a $3 house wine may be the best way of attracting someone who has never been through the Mai Kai's front doors. Some people might be intimidated by the full drink menu, and this special is a way of saying "Yes, you are welcome too." Some people, who may not drink much, may simply prefer wine, and this would allow them to also join a happy-hour with co-workers without paying full price for their drink.

Once you get them into the Molokai bar, then they will see the decor, be intrigued by the many drink offering presentations, not to mention the drums from the live stage show from within the Mai Kai (if they stay after happy hour closes)

That is when they become hooked, and before you know it, they are guzzling 151 Rum Swizzlers every week.

I have a feeling the ad was just worded a little awkwardly. I suspect both men and women can order either 1/2 price cocktails from the menu or the other drinks listed there at those prices. Maybe it was worded that way because the majority of women really do order those items? I dunno. Clumsy advertising? Probably.

And actually Pablus, 50% off is better than 2-for-1 if you only want one drink. I know, I know, the horror! But for many people, one Barrel O Rum is probably enough. I don't know any of those people, but I'm sure they're out there. Somewhere.

As soon as Sally is done with the dishes, she's headed to the Mai-Kai for some swell ladies' specials!

Sorry... you all know I love the Mai-Kai, but I couldn't resist.

Most of the drinking population drinks well drinks. You may go for a Zombie on occasion, but even if the Mai Kai were in my back yard, I'd likely order a gin and tonic more often than not. We all have our drinks of choice.

Making that clear to the world and offering specials like that to the world, that's just all around good. "Come have your favorite at a special price and try one of our specialties while you are here."

I enjoy my Tiki drinks, but no way I'd have them all the time. Those fruit juices tear your stomach up. And they are not generally "light" fare like a hi-ball.

Offering specials on a Friday just rocks. Wish I could be there. With Allegiant offering one way flights at $49.. anybody down there wanna put me up for a night or two?

It's a great idea to expand the happy hour to wine, beer and well drinks, but why even introduce gender into the equation? I'm sure you can order from both sides, but again, why mention it in the first place? It's 2008.

Their stats have probably shown that women tend to order less off their tiki menu and more single pours, wine etc. So, in trying to attract women to the bar, an offer of 50% off tiki drinks wouldn't do much good.
By the same token, offering discounted beers and single pours to the guys may result in a bunch of frat boy beer guzzlers, changing the dynamic of the Molokai Bar. So, my thought is, they're trying to keep the guys ordering Tiki drinks while allowing women more flexibility. This may be 2008, but differences between the sexes personal preference (statistically speaking) shouldn't be ignored either.
In the UK, many bars still proudly post signs prohibiting "same-sex groups", even in 2008. This isn't meant to be discriminatory - they're simply trying to discourage "sword-fights" or stag nights / doe parties.

Personally, I'm very happy!!! 2 Happy Hour drinks are never enough. I usually finished the 2HH drinks and got stiffed (insert trans-gender joke here) on the third waiting for everyone to catch up. Now if they would just get rid of the Parking fee!

We may be in 2008, but the Mai-Kai is happily fixed in an earlier time....

They have valet service that is free (well, I tip them the same as they 'charge' so it isn't really free, but it is still fun!)

They still have a Maitre D that greets you when you walk in. And he is so much more than the simple greeter you get at most places today.

They still have a Bar Captain that will escort you to a seat in the bar.

They still have Table Captains that will take your order. And you have a Waiter and a Cocktail Waiter. This is something you don't see too often these days....

And there is so much more to the place. All of it along the lines of a fabulous restaurant and bar (Best Steaks in South Florida!) that makes you feel like you have stepped back into an earlier time. So if we are going to step back in time, why not a Ladies Night presented in a wonderfully (if clumsily advertised) retro way.

I was given one by one of the managers at Trader Vic's Las Vegas & I was genuinely shocked to actually like it. Go figure!
I agree with preferring the original rum-based concoction, but the Vodka one was surprisingly good - really!

I agree with preferring the original rum-based concoction, but the Vodka one was surprisingly good - really!

I do remember a few Hukilaus ago ordering a Absolute Mai Tai sitting next to J.Titleblum at the bar. Shock and Awe!!!
Then I told him it was Mrs. T's drink. Believe it or not, alot of islanders can't drink rum.

Well, now that it is out there..... Mrs T was never big into Rum. The drink menu in the Molokai Bar has a little star-block of text in one corner offering any drink on the menu to be substituted with Vodka.
