Anyone a member of Playboy.com?

Pages: 1 2 54 replies

S

I found this referer on the Hukilau site, but you have to be a member to get to the site. You can save the page or it's text, or whatever and send it to me privately if you wish. I just want to know what it says about us!

T

Would any guy own up to being a "member"? Come on guys. Where are you? With 1000 TC members strong, at least 1 of you should be.
I'd be part of Playgirl.com,if there was such a thing, and give any info needed......is there one? I'm probably setting myself up here, but I'll give it a shot anyway. You guys seem like a fun loving bunch.

No I'm not but we've all seen one, right?

My wife bought me a subscription but I let it run out. I just never had time to read the articles!!!

heehee.....

Hey Swanky (and everyone):

Not that playboy.com is doing it, but that's a new spamming technique. Their severs send out HTTP requests to websites (not from anyone visiting the site, but from the site's servers themselves) with the refering information being whatever site they want you to visit.

I heard they're targeting Blogs this way, and also random websites. It happens to my sites quite a bit it seems, but never to a page that was "members only".

Please keep us posted on what's there...

Sadly, the Playboy club in London is long gone. I understand it was situated close
to Trader Vic's. What a night out that would have been to combine the two....
An earlier thread pointed out that there was a Playboy club directly opposite the Kahiki, too.I guess they complement each other perfectly.

I remember my father returning from a visit to London with one of their famous tankards
and thinking at the time that it was the height of decadence. What had my father been up to?! It's a shame that these days a visit to the Playboy club is no longer a possibility, and there isn't anything to fill the void. Perhaps I might just write to old Hef and ask him to consider re-opening
the old club in London. The post-PC society in the UK might just go for it.

Hanford,
I get those fake referals regularly. Netfactual does it. I got one from a porn site too. A fake hit designed to make you visit their site. This is not one of those, unless they spend a lot of time studying your site first. The URL has ...feature/tikibar03.htm in it. It's an article of some kind with a link to Hukilau. We may just have to pony up $20 for a one month subscription...

Don't know if this is related, but when I was at the Politiki in DC late last year the bartender told me Playboy was doing a tiki article and that his drink recipe for a "Shark's Tooth" was going to be published in the magazine.

[ Edited by: Kailuageoff on 2003-05-29 08:04 ]

Well guys, I can end this mystery right here and now: I wrote the article in question (some of you remember I was asking about some Tiki /Playboy releated questions a few weeks ago...).

It's a top-10 Tiki Bars list, each with a little history and some of best drinks mentioned.

One funny note is that the editor at Playboy wanted me to include references to hot women in as many places as I could. Whatever!

Unfortunatley, I cannot post it here - I'd get in trouble.

But that isn't to say that someone else couldn't...

S

Well James, how is there a Hukilau link in it?

K

Is that a web feature only or is it in the print edition too? Either way it's cool, but penning an article in Playboy Magazine, that's one line on the resume many people would be jealous of (including me).

I mentioned both Exotica 2003 and Hukilau in the article (which is on the web only, not in print), and provided links to both, by way of trying to hype these events a little more for you guys.

K

well now that you know someone at that company maybe you can convince them to do a print tiki piece in time!

S

If you search Ebay in the mature section for tiki, there is a Playboy video out there with "tiki" in this description anyway. here

I think you can find all your needs here.

T

I just heard from my editor at Playboy.com that the feature is up for all to read at:

http://www.playboy.com/features/features/tikibars/

I took a look at it, and it came out pretty good, but I was surprised to find that she made some rather curious changes and additions without telling me. That's her perogative I guess (unfortunately), but since TC'ers are probably the only ones truly interested, indulge me as I vent:

I didn't name the article, and if I had, "Mai Tai One On" would have been a choice that I'd rather have slit my wrists than have used.

In the sentence "New tiki bars (named for tikis, the exotic spirits and gods featured in those kitschy wood carvings from the South Pacific) are popping up all over the world...", the bit in parenthesis was added without my consent; I would have defined 'Tiki' differently, and would NEVER have implied that authentic South Pacific carvings and/or Tikis are kitschy in any way.

The phrase "Don the Beachcomber, the 1930s mixologist who invented many modern tiki drinks" was changed: my 'restauranteur' became 'mixologist', and puzzlingly, 'classic' became 'modern'.

I had nothing to do with the picture of Elvis or the caption below it, or the captions: "Swankiest Cocktails" or "Tiki Bar That Belongs in Swingers".

...and there are a few other ones too, but for the most part, the piece came out pretty good (unlike the miserable and dreadfully inaccurate piece that has appeared here: http://www.chicagotribune.com/features/lifestyle/q/chi-0306010340jun01,1,6944479.story?coll=chi%2Dleisureq%2Dhed ...a real excersize in how far one can be misinterpreted and misquoted).

This bit however, came out fairly well:

http://www.newcitychicago.com/chicago/2486.html

okay, I'm done.

K

I've been staring that that picture of Hef's basement "tiki bar" for a while now and can't make out anything tiki about it. The room itself is hard to make out (except for the brass pole - placed for impromtu strip shows?). I'm surprised playboy couldn't find a better picture.
great article! and I like those big side graphics, that playboy web guy has my affinity for big graphics.

And just when you thought the shameless self-promotion of the book was coming to an end...

K

What the heck is your problem with James dude? Are you not aware that his website was one of the first and best on the Internet about Tiki and that he integrally helped spur this community by introducing them to tikidom? This is the 3rd post you've made trying to dis James (that I know of), stop it!

Ditto what Kahukini says. James' tiki bar review pages and http://www.exotic-tiki-gardens.com are what turned me on to the many possibilities of tiki in Florida, and caused me to buy Sven's book... Cut him some slack already.
Aloha.

H

A lot of folks here are able to make some money off of their passion, which is the greatest thing in the world, and deserves our support, especially if we share that passion. It would be a lot less fun to be into tiki without Sven & James's books, without all the great carver's tikis, without Munktiki & Tiki Farm's mugs, without all the eBayers of special artifacts and vintage clothing. I think it's fantastic. I'm more than happy to spend my disposable income on tiki stuff, and I'm doubly happy to send my disposable income to fellow tikiphiles.

A

You seem to be missing the point. I have no problem with any creative person making a living with their talent. Though it seems some people's talent lies exclusively in promoting themselves. Does anybody know the meaning of the word MODESTY? I am tired of everyone tooting their own horn ad nauseum. That includes endless postings of people showing off. I love reading posts by people who have something of substance to contribute. If James' website turned you on to tiki, great. If you need someone else to tell you what to think or what is cool, that's just sad.

Okay, I admit it. I was born into this world with a shrunken skull full of mush and have been trying to fill it ever since. Donn and Vic (or Sven and James) don't tell any us how to think, but I have to give them credit for muddling our minds.

You're telling me...I'd switch teams for that smoldering hunk of burning manhood, with those chiseled good looks and fluffy pompadour.

oh my god...did I just think that or did I post that?

Boring, stupid reply. Typical frat boy mentatity. You boys all line up when someone has a different opinion, don't you? And Bong, I would expect you to call bulls**t on something when you see it, not encourage bullying of someone who speakes her mind.

Since I have nothing of value to put towards this, I will say my piece.

James kicks ass, his self-promotion was prompted (playboy thread, he has an article upcoming in playboy), and buy my shit.

If it weren't for posting because of related occurrences, what would we do.. just chat about our opinions?

Uuuhhh, better make that "Suck em up, sista".
Hugs and kisses.

If you don't promote yourself, who will? Sure, Britney Spears has people do it for her, but anything below that level, you do it yourself. Whether it's your book, CD or event. Nobody will do it for you.

Even when someone does promote you, it was you that got them to do it!

Get off your high horse and live in this world. The world where someone like James spends a couple of years of his life putting together a book about something he has a passion for and then gets it published not knowing he'll sell any. And then he spends his next couple of years arranging his life to try to get the book some attention and sales to justify it all. His book sells for $15 or so and he may get $2. It's a niche market which means there were likely only a few thousand printed and he'll have to work to get those sold. And in the end, he's worked countless hours on this and gotten pennies for it. Why?

Then some smart ass boob wants to criticize a guy who got off his ass and did something we all appreciate and is trying to make it a viable product. Hard work. That's what it is.

Stop playa hatin'.

ahilava: Why don't you look at the beginning of this thread? Swanky mentioned the article in Playboy, not JT. Later in the thread JT discusses the article, which Playboy asked him to write. I don't see this as JT tooting his horn.

Let us know when you've traveled the world searching out and researching tiki bars for 10 years, compiled the reviews and a database of tiki bars around the world on a web site for all to use for free, written a comprehensive guidebook compiling and describing tiki bars, spent a year or 2 trying to find a publisher, and then traveled around signing the book and meeting people who appreciate all that you've accomplished.

With a little more follow-through, I think you might be able to construct a workable insult in there somewhere. But without being more specific about who you're referring to, I can't figure out what the heck your point is.

Are you saying JT's talent lies exclusively in promoting himself? Exclusively in promoting his book? Are you talking about someone else?

JT's post has some of the most tiki-related substance in this whole thread. Therefore, you must have loved reading it, because you love reading posts with something of substance to contribute. Right?

Are you specifically saying someone on this list (maybe Kailuageoff) needs James' website to tell them what to think or what is cool? Do you have any favorite websites? If so, I guess you visit them because you need someone to tell you what to think?

This all sounds absurd to me. I'm curious how you see creative people making a living or even a minimal return on their work without promotion. I'm also curious why you think talking about a tiki related book or article on a tiki website is shameless self-promotion, as opposed to on-topic discussion, especially when many members specifically say they enjoy hearing about it!

Ahilava:

I'm not even going to bother responding to your individual comments. Everyone else has already taken care of that, with intelligence, taste and perhaps more good humour than you deserve.

All I have to say is this: if you are really as bratty and rude as you appear to be, well, either grow up or go soak your head, Miss Sour Grapes! Sheesh! I have never in my life tried to make friends with a group of people by dissing one of their friends! (And then obstinately refusing to stop, and going on to insult everyone else into the bargain!)

What planet are you from?!? A lonely one, probably...

Anyway, if YOU ever write a book, be sure to let us know--oh, but you wouldn't, would you? That would be "shameless self-promotion"! :D

sincerely,

Damnit, Janet! How did I ever bypass this topic? Let's see:

Playboy...masturbation...tooting one's horn

On that note, in a related sense, so to speak, regarding the above, uh, ability...unfortunately I long ago discovered, to my chagrin, that I am just NOT flexible enough to accomplish the feat. Curses, I was a tennis player, not a gymnast. Then again, if I were so contortionally gifted I'd never leave the house.

And another thing!!!

I feel a little late in ganging up on someone but I can help feel that the showing off comment was partially directed at me.

I post pics of tiki related things I have made for a couple of reasons.

1- To inspire others who share a common interest.

2- To get positive feedback that reinforces my desire to make more of these things.

Tiki Central has sparked many of my ideas by seeing someone else doing something inspiring. Carving their own tiki, making their own lamp, decorating their home etc. Most ideas are the culmination of other peoples ideas that you have chosen to express with your own twist. The feedback I seek is largely because the accountants I surround myself with don't understand my interest. You usually get the raised eyebrows with the comment "thats nice, how long did it take you to make that? What is it?

I do believe we've scared off another one.

I am not scared off by a few critical replys. Some of us have a life outside of Tiki Central, you know other things to do besides sit and defend our every word. I think it's interesting that a number of people who would most likely consider themsleves "alternative" and like to think that they are more open-minded would get so worked up by someone who would call into question the motives of someone's postings. Be they James' endless plugs or Basement Kahuna's constant updates of his home bar- and the requisite ohs and ahs. No, of course, none of this is about ego building.

And this group think mentality—insult one of us, insult us all. Come on. I had hoped that this cliquish behavior was gone the day I left high school. I think that the majority of folks who post regularly are contributing a great deal to the Tiki revival and they have some real insight and information to share. I can acccept criticisim and I can even accept silly name calling like "boob". I think that everyone should take whatever I might have to say with the same gravity that I take what they have to say- that's not much.

I have to admit the reason that I even bothered to look at this thread was the Playboy reference in the title. I expected it to be more of the nerd-boy oogling of bimbos — look up the previous threads yourself Muggler. I can't belive how thin-skined some people are, assuming that comments are directed at them, when that's totally not the case.

I am not a mean or angry person, on the contrary. And I think it would be wise to point out that like any other medium, the number of people who take time to contribute to the discussion pales to the number of people who simply read or observe. So I am sure that I'm not the only one who holds these opinions, just as there is more than one Buffett fan on Tiki Central.

Some of us have a life outside of Tiki Central, you know other things to do besides sit and defend our every word

But it takes like, 5 seconds to type something, sheesh.

Come on. I had hoped that this cliquish behavior was gone the day I left high school.

Yeah, why can't we all grow up and pretend we live up to the concept of how we "should" behave according to rules set by noone a long time ago! Phooey!

I think that everyone should take whatever I might have to say with the same gravity that I take what they have to say- that's not much.

Your mother is a [expletive deleted].

No, that role is filled. You're current message board role is contrary to popular opinion poster. Mine is ignored genius (seems to be a common occurrence) and occassional unintelligible quip.

I love message boards, each one unique, all the same.

M

I don't think there is anything wrong with ego building-if it doesn't hurt anyone else.
I'd rather have a happy ego that a broken/depressed one.

Yup, that was me... checking with James about ditching school and hanging out in Waikiki as a young lad... Drinking Tropicals at the Honolulu Restaurant in the early eighties. And years later, still listening to James, ditching my responsibilties and hanging out at the Hawaiian Inn in Daytona Beach.

You are assuming an awful lot about a very diverse group of people on this board. Being into tiki does not necessarily mean we think we are "open-minded" or consider ourselves "alternative."

I can't speak for the others, but I am not worked up. It's just that nothing is on TV right now.

Why are you so concerned over whether someone is "ego building?" If you don't like it, then don't read it. Personally, I enjoy seeing Basement Kahuna's work (and all the other artists on this board for that matter), and I don't feel James has stepped over the line in talking about his book here. It is certainly a relevant topic.

This "group think mentality" thing is all in your head. Take a look at some of the past discussions on politics in the "Beyond Tiki" board and you will see the diverse opinions of the people on TC.

Perhaps what you perceive as a "group think mentality" is really an overwhelming number of people expressing their individual opinions which just happen to be different from yours.
