The original, and still the best. Sanitized by magic Trannyhunes for your protection.

And here's a Don the Beachcomber-style Kon-Tiki Mai Tai from Sippin' Safari, made with a lovely ginger-infusion syrup:

Last night I went to the Pacific Restaurant in Sterling Virginia. I was VERY impressed. I had a zombie and a mai tai. The zombie was light pink in color and just strong enough. The mai tai was shaken (Unlike House Without a Key), and also the right color. Very tasty!

Here's the pics:

First, the mai tai:

Second: the zombies - I really like the blue mermaid mugs.

i just bought this mermaid mug at a chnese place near my house.

Ahh...my Mai Tai, last month - June 19, 09- outside, on the front porch of Tahiti Nui in Hanalei, Kauai.
It looked and tasted great, but the setting made it perfect!

This was the view from my table. The mountains and waterfalls are incredible!

I noticed in some of the Mai Tai pics that the drinks have a healthy head of foam on top. Maybe Martiki can chime in here, but do they use a frothing agent in the drinks to achieve this or is it the type of orgeat they're using?

My brother gave me this great old book called "Drinks of Hawaii" that has recipes but also takes a comical look at the drinks.

Shaking a drink with pineapple juice (as in an "Island-style" Mai Tai) will give it a little frothy head.

The Smugglers Cove Mai Tai was great, I also liked the Tar Pit's and Caña's, Tahiti Joe's was probably the worst. :drink:

Boris, what did you think of the Galley's Mai Tai? I drink a lot of them even though it's Hawaiian-style.

And don't you hate it when they don't serve it up in an old-fashioned glass. That really ruins the experience for me.

Bora Boris posted on 10/20/2010

It was STRONG but I liked it. Their happy hour is really good, I should go more often. :)

Yes, a Double Old Fashioned glass is the best way to go, I've seen some in pint glasses and that's the worst.

The glass is from Tony's on the Pier in Redondo Beach, the glass comes with every Mai Tai.

Good luck trying to leave without one. :)

I found a Tony's glass at a Goodwill here in Denver a few months back.
The glass made it through one half of a mai-tai before a cat sent it crashing to the floor.

Great pics Bora Boris! That's quite a research project you've undertaken. I'm sure it must be difficult for you. Ha!

It doesn't surprise me that the two worst were the ones you mentioned based simply on appearance. The far left bottom looks like a rum and coke and the far right is Pink. No Mai-Tai should EVER be pink. :)

Cheers and Aloha!

Here's 12 from my trip to Waikiki in October.

Top row left to right ~ Kana Ka Pila Grille, La Mariana Sailing Club, Shore Bird, House Without a Key.

Middle row left to right ~ Hilton Hawaiian Village Tapa Bar, Ilikai, Chart House Guy Tai, Hula Grill.

Bottom row left to right ~ Chuck's Steak House, Moana Surfrider, Royal Hawaiian Scratch Mai Tai, Royal Hawaiian’s Trader Vic’s Style Mai Tai.

My favorites in order were The House Without a Key, both Royal Hawaiian Mai Tais (the scratch and the Trader Vic’s style), the Guy Tai made by Guy was solid.

My least favorite was Hula Grill's, it had almost an appley taste to it but I won't let one bad appley Mai Tai spoil the whole bunch. :)

Was just going through some pics from 2012, and came across a snapshot of my favorite mai tai of the year. Sometimes it's not just the drink, but everything else around the drinker too, that makes it great.

Our dining table gets blasted by the evening sun in the summer, so we usually have the blinds closed during dinner. For some reason this one evening we left them open. And usually I don't make mai tais, just because there's a lot of other drinks I like better. But again, this was an exception. So with those two elements plus an exceptional breaded fish dinner from my wife, the whole shebang was so satisfying I had to take a picture. I guess these are the kinds of warm summer nights you remember in February.
