I've got the Road Trip book, but I'd like the advice of the masters. Part two: Same question with a tight budget in mind. (Haven't decided how I want to do it yet) Part three: Places not in the Road Trip book between there and L.A. Thanks! Oh yeah, Water's important! It will cost you over $100 for the cheapeast room depending on when you go. I looked into staying there in October and even mid week it was $110 for a AAA rate. But they're right on the bay and walking distance from the Bali Hai and Trader Mort's (tikified liquor store). There are tikis on the beautiful tropical grounds at Humphrey's but no tiki bar or restaurant on site. An option if you don't mind not being next to the water is the Hanalei in Mission Valley. The Islands restaurant is there and there are enough tikis on the grounds to keep you happy (including a big moai next to the pool). Rates there start around $100. There are numerous resort hotels in the Mission Bay area that have been de-tikied some time ago but still have a tropical feel. The Catamaran Resort, Hyatt Islandia, and Paradise Point Resort are the main ones. All are expensive. There are no cheap hotels on or near Shelter Island that I can recommend but in Mission Valley (near the Hanalei) there are numerous lower priced chains like Kings Inn, Tavelodge, Comfort Inn, etc.

It may be a bit cheaper than Humphreys. Also, it may be quiter\serene because if you have an ocean view, because the parking lot for the public boat harbor is across the street from Humphrey's (ocean side).

I'm looking into taking a second mortgage on my house for the weekend at the hotels. I am however, interested in a place with proximity to water that you can play in. Most of the Shelter Island and surrounding area hotel photos I see show a lot of harbors. I don't want to bang in to too many boats while body surfing, etc. Any ideas on a place not too far away with beach access? I can drive to The Tike sites for dinner, etc. Thanks!

[ Edited by: spy-tiki on 2003-07-22 11:58 ] You want to stay in Pacific Beach or Mission Beach. There are plenty of places to stay right on the beach or a short walk. If you're on a low budget there's a Banana Bungalow hostel in PB. There's even a motel on Crystal Pier! The body surfing can be real good in PB. http://www.welovepb.com/ The only drawback is that Shelter Island is a good drive away (20-30 minutes). A closer beach to Shelter Island is Ocean Beach. It's a real crunchy scene there but the people are friendly and there's an amazing underwater themed bar downtown called Pacific Shores. An interesting article about OB: http://www.sandiegomag.com/issues/august97/ob.shtml For snorkeling the La Jolla cove area should be checked out. It's also a nice place to stay but very expensive.

Watch out for the PB partiers. They can drink like fish. Good food choices in PB are Kono's Surf Club Cafe, World Famous, The Eggery, and Cotija taco stand. So, we're booked at the Half Moon Inn and will be checking out Bali Hai again. (Last trip there, the gift shop was closed) I'm pumped!

After that you can wander down Newport to Tony's for the world's best martini (& if you can still stand after that) hit South Beach at the end of the street for killer fish tacos. Another good shop to visit (close too) is Solai on Morena Blvd. I'm just getting ready to head up there now to pick up some bamboo for my new mug shelf (roughly fashioned after the one pictured on the cover of Intoxica). But I was assured it was Trader Vics authentic before I ordered it.........BEFORE. Anyway - cool decor, need to work on the rest of it.

I thought their food was salty, and their drinks lacking. On the other hand, their waitreses were young and hip. IMHO the place is not (yet) worthy of having Mai Tai in their name. A Mr. Mai Tai's mai tai is like a peck on the cheek. On the other hand, a Bali Hai mai tai is like a kick in the head.
