Tiki and Mid-Century Suggestions in San Diego?

I searched the Forum for all the info relating to San Diego and plan to buy the Tiki Road Trip book tomorrow, but I could really use some help with the basics. I am new to this forum and don't know my way around San Diego. Could anyone help me out with where to go to visit great Tiki sites and cool mid-century anything? (Is there an echo on this board?) Shopping: Horton Plaza is fun in an LA 84 Olympics type of way (designed by Jon Verde, the same architect). There is also La Jolla for shopping. For modernism, check out the Solana Beach train station, newly designed fora 50s retro look. Also, you will want to dine at the flamingo colored art deco China Camp, on Kettner, downtown.

Thank You, Gem (not Sparky) The Bali Hai has mediocre to lousy food. I highly recommend driving over to the Islands at the Hanalei for dinner and heading back to the Bali Hai for drinks after. The Islands dining room is gorgeous. Words can't really do it justice but picture a rock and giant clamshell waterfall, little bridges over pools of water, and a group of huge glass floats suspended from the center of the ceiling. It's really magical at night. And the food is a bit better than at the Bali Hai.

Nevertheless, I can vouch for and do recommend the cuisine at the Bali Hai. (Their menu is on their website).

And if not which would be a better to place to eat? Not at all. The Islands Restaurant is in the Red Lion Hanalei in Mission Valley (off I8). I agree with Tiki Road Trip that it's THE tiki destination in SD. The Bali Hai is well worth a visit because you can drink out of a Bali Hai mug and the views are great, but there are more tikis and a more of a original polynesian restaurant experience at the Islands. Don't bother going to the Hanalei just to visit the bar though. It's been remodeled so now the only way to experience the Hanalei is to eat in the dining room. Also stroll around the grounds and check out the large atrium area in the middle of the main tower. There's a waterfall and ponds with some tikis among the tropical plants. I don't know anything about the Best Western except that it is near the Bali Hai and Humphrey's Half Moon Inn.

Also, I would recommend Shelter Island (Humphreys - Best Western Island Palms) over Hotel Circle as to where to stay based on the proximity to the ocean(harbor). However, you cannot see the sun setting over the water from Shelter Island. (You may have to spend more and stay at Paradise Point or the Cattamaran). I am sure you will have a wonderful vacation; I wish I still lived there!

Darn! I thought the Islands was open 7 days a week. I would like to know for sure because I'll be in Mexico for a wedding in October and we plan on driving to San Diego on Monday, Oct. 13th. and have dinner at the Islands that night.
