I hate hearing that people think the Tonga is not that great! Yeah.... shelve your attitude when you go in there about the drinks and service and enjoy the AMAZING setting.... all of the OA artwork and the kitchy thunderstorm! They still need to sink the band when they are out on that raft, but other than that, the Tonga Room is a one of a kind place. Every time I'm in the city I stop by there. It must be preserved. |

Nice find, Scispy. TC Members reading the New York Times - literary elites - very highbrow! I like this quote: "hotel officials quickly cautioned that no construction was planned until at least 2012." I am also glad they are giving lip service to recreating the Tonga Room experience elsewhere, but I doubt it will be anything more than using the name. |

I've been on a Mug Safari through the Central Coast and in SF the past few days. Last night I went to the Tonga Room. I can't confirm the bad reviews concerning the food but the drinks were sorry (Bora Bora and a Tonga Itch). Luckily I just considered them to be the price to spend some time in the Tonga Room. It was indeed an experience not to be missed. Definitely worth the drive from Ventura County. Today I went to Trader Vi's in Emeryville for lunch. INCREDIBLE. Everything wonderful ever said about the place is true. I had Bongo Bongo soup and a Mai Tai and a Dr. Funk. Words fail me. It was great. They gave me a drink menu. It was so great that I changed my plans to go to Forbidden Island. I'm going to save a separate date for that establishment at another time. Very succesful Mug Safari especially finding a Tonga Room hurricane glass in thrift store for fifty cents. Nancy |

That's not so bad if you think about it..... Isn't the world supposed to come to an end in 2012 anyway? |

Stopped by the Tonga Room during a one-day trip to SF. Alas, it was closed for a private party. It would be worth checking in advanced, to avoid disappointment. |
