For those living in or around Montreal or stopping in town next Saturday, the Mai Tai Orchestra (a Quebec based Exotica and Polynesian pop music combo) will launch their new CD entitled "I Found My Wahine" with a live show at the Divan Orange club (10pm). Here's a few links: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=269458092 And for those who can read french, here's some more details: |

Wow, I guess I'm just totally out of the loop. From what I could dig up, the Mai Tai Orchestra has been releasing stuff since at least 2000 (almost a decade ago!)Yikes! Where have I been? And exactly how long has this been going on? |

I wrote about these guys and reviewed one of their live shows for my Mai Tai zine quite a few years back... you can dig up the article at maitaionline.com They were on hiatus for awhile but are back this year with the new disc (I contributed some liner notes... i.e. cocktail recipes) and a few upcoming shows, including the above-mentioned record launch (Happy Hour outdoor acoustic set at 5 p.m. and an indoor full show at 10 p.m. this Saturday) as well as a free outdoor appearance at the Montreal Jazz Festival on July 12. I'll be featuring some of the new record on Thrifitng for Tunes (luxuriamusic.com) in July... |

Wow, the resemblance is amazing. That tiki is a little too stylized for this to be a "coincidence". |

Actually I'm more amused than annoyed. Think of it: An exotica band pinches a tiki artist's design. And that particular tiki artist just happens to be another exotica band's drummer. Oh the irony! But they do sound great! So we should do shows together :) |

I'll find out when and where the CD will be available when I see the band and speak to their drummer Justin on Saturday... I'll gladly post the info here as soon as I find out. I'm anxious to get a copy myself. So far, all I've seen is the CD booklet proofs and it looks good. You can hear samples on the band's MySpace page, by the way... for those expecting exotica, it's actually more Hawaiian/Hapa Haole and kind of reminds me of old Leo Addeo records at times... As for the April Wine member playing with the band... well, maybe not a full-fledged member of AW but someone who played with the band at some point? The Mai Tai Orchestra can get as big as 18-20 members for certain performances and a lot of local musicians get involved. |

Well, I hope they gave a credit or something for lifting that Tiki design. |

Just looked at the lo-res CD booklet proofs they sent me a couple of weeks back... can't make out too much of the text... but that squid tiki does not appear in the booklet (don't know how it ended up on the show flyer... maybe someone else did it). The photos on the booklet all seem (to me) to be shot at the Coconut Motel & Bar in Trois-Rivières, QC. The extent of my involvement was providing a few cocktail recipes that are included at the bottom of each page of the booklet... that's it. |

That is the place! New owners in the last few years (I haven't met them) but they haven't changed a thing. And yes, there are still quite a few great places up here... |

Caught a short, outdoor acoustic set the other day but not the full show... But I do have some info... The record will be out on July 7, and will be available on iTunes and at the following websites to start... ... before spreading to other online shops... |

Well, I did caught the full two sets show later that night and I had a really good time. We don't get to hear that kind of music very often up here. To my knowledge, I think they're the only Polynesian influenced live band in or around Montreal anyway. Here's a few photos of the 10 members band playing on a really tiny stage. Finally, here's a couple of links to get an idea of how they sounded (sorry for the quality): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpYsJRytWMg A hui hou I'm french canadian so please don't mind my english writing.
