After going up to Vegas for SEMA we came home with an awesome dining set. Thank goodness for rental minivans!

And of course, a few mugs and a calendar from the trip to Frankie's.

OK, before I left for Vegas, I found these:

Next, on to Vegas! First, Frankie's. I know these aren't really "finds", but I'm gonna post 'em anyway. I was doing OK after the Bombora Blast & the Thurston Howl, but I shoulda saved the Tiki Bandit for another night! I had a killer headache, the next morning. I know, I know, I'm a lightweight!

Mike, the bartender, sure was generous with the swizzles & matchbooks, he put in my bag. Thanks, again, Mike.

Sorry, John-O. I didn't hit too many of your hotspots. I was too busy scouring the antique stores for this stuff.
A swizzle from the Hale Tiki & one of Tiki Lee's "business" cards. Great, idea, Lee.

A few Coco Joe's:

A Tiki bowl from the defunct, crappy Trader Vic's:

A nice pair of Made In Japan S&Ps:

I know this isn't exactly vintage, but for $20.00, I figured I could use it somewhere. Besides, where else is a guy from Massachusetts gonna find a piece of Tiki backglass from a slot machine?

A very cool, very well-carved outrigger, about 18" long:

My favorite Vegas find, a nice little bowl from the Aku Aku:

I picked these next 2 items up at SEMA. My buddy, Jimmy Flintstone, hooked me up with this little statue:

This next little number wouldn't fit in my carry-on, so I had to leave her behind! What a sweet, girl! Thanks, again, Doris!

Upon my return, I found these waiting for me:
Three mugs from The Islands in Phoenix:

A real nice little, Made In Japan, hula girl:

And a cool swizzle from the South Seas, Boston & West Hartford:

If you go to Vegas, be sure to hit Frankie's on Wednesday night. The local Ohana were great! I had a blast! thanks, again, everyone. See ya next year!

Here's some recent finds:

A Coco Joe's penholder I didn't have:

A Strikow kahlua decanter

The Elvis Blue Hawaii action figure. It comes with a uke, lei, mini movie poster in a stand, and a long board

I've been looking for a cheap one of these since 2001. I have the karate Elvis from this series.

I wanted this Stockton Islander bucket mug because I don't see much Islander stuff down here...

The Harvey's and Malio's were forced upon me by the seller as part of the deal

Hecho in Mexico bali Hai mug with no lid:

Kon Tiki with a slipcover to replace mine without one:

Buzzy Out!

Kate,

Channel some of that mojo my way, I still need to find that gravel or tile Moai art! You are on fire!

That there be Ports O' Call in Dallas. A Steve Crane operation similar to Kon Tiki Ports.

A couple of years ago, TC member Billbot posted these photos in TikiFinds and was informed by another member that the lamps came from Trader Vics. They are made of wood.

I never expected to find one of them myself. However, luck was shining on me recently when I found a similar lamp. The carving is of a different tiki style but the shade and parts appear to be identical to those Billbot found.

So fingers crossed, could this also be from a former Trader Vic's ? We did have one here in Kansas City once. Does anyone know more about this style lamp?

B
bigbrotiki posted on 11/13/2009

Never seen that one! VERY cool old "Janus" Tiki lamp, no idea if it was made for a chain, or individual places. It's not in the O.A. catalog either. We need to scour postcard interiors to see if it can be found on tables. And those Trader Vic's lamps above are the indeed the original ones, the only type T.V.'s ever had, as seen in "I AM CUBA",--not the chin-less Asian imports you see around now.

TIKI HUNTERS in the Pasadena area. Great tiki yard sale on 11/14/09. 9AM start time.

I saw this ad on Craigslist for a yard sale for tomorrow (11/14/09)

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sgv/gms/1464366891.html

Since I couldn't be there in Saturday, I emailed them to ask if I could see the tiki items on Friday. They were nice enough to let me come by for an advanced look.

They have a ton of tiki items for sale and they were still setting up. I picked up a few items and I took some phone camera pix of what they still had to sell tomorrow.

Some framed Hawaiian prints

Some of you might want to stop by and take a look. They had a few mugs and some old framed menus. Since they were nice to me, I told them I would get the word out.

Happy hunting.

I got all of this stuff out of one place yesterday, I never really cared about having the big fork and spoon, I have passed on several sets but these have a Tiki carved into the handle so I couldn't resist. I love these drapes there are 3 panels in this set my grandmother used to have these in her front room. The doll in the red hawaiian wedding dress has eyes that open and close. The detail on the other 2 polynesian dancers is incredible. The( Fu-Man-Chu ?)mug on the far left in back is from the Hala Kahiki in River Grove IL. I spent about 3 hours at this place.

Wood carved tiki orgin unknown.

Tahiti. It probably has some holes in the hands where there were once clubs or spears.

Buzzy Out!

Ah, another Tahitian piece. Nope, no holes in the hands...

Thanks Buzzy!

I didn't find much this weekend, which is actually a good thing since my wallet needed a rest after last weekend.

I picked up a nice Iolani shirt, a dress, a couple of mugs, a Don the Beachcomber swizzle and money clip and two ashtrays. The lamp was my find of the day. I've wanted one of these for a while now, but this was the first affordable one that I've seen.

tikithomas - Those were made by a company called Admiral. Doctor Z found a few of those in their original boxes at a garage sale some years ago. Here's a photo:

 the cocktail napkin is from the Long Beach swapmeet. The Maori club pendant is from an estate sale. The family went to New Zealand during the 60s or 70s and they must have picked this up then.

 also a Sotheby's catalog from a Tribal Art auction in the 80s which has some Oceanic pieces. Also "My First Geography of the Pacific" from 1944 with beautiful illustrations:

Thanks for that lp photo, bigbro! Nice to see those drinks actually sitting on the tables.

The Covarrubias-like artist is Cornelius De Witt. He illustrated a whole series of these books in the 40s for Little, Brown & Company, as well as the Golden Encyclopedia. They appear to be done in pastel or colored-pencil. The books are over-sized, so the illustrations are nice and large.

Detail of two pieces, each about 27" tall and 8" wide. Very dense wood and smooth. Thrift store finds. Nothing to indiciate where they were carved.

I bought some carvings in Tonga a couple of years ago that look very similar.
