Mickey Hart Music

Actually Lucas, I think we are a lot closer in musical taste that it first
seemed, and since we have pretty much derailed this thread, I will briefly
continue.
While I listen to many different kinds of music, I keep things pretty well
defined in my tiki environment. 90 per cent classic exotica, cuz it helps preserve
the mood. The only exceptions that I will listen to in the "lounge" are
Coltrane's "Love Supreme", Miles' "Birth of the Cool", various
Babatunda Olatunji cds, and, oh yea, a little Mickey Hart, the Blasters (must
be an old hippie thing), and the first two Paul Butterfield Blues Band
albums. I am not supposing that Butterfield is tiki....I just like how it
makes me feel.
At the root of it all...I pretty much feel like a tiki purist too.

How do you feel about beatnik music?

To me, Beatnik music is hard to classify, as it could be everything from Bebop to very early folk (Like the new christie minstrels, etc).

Beatnik writes such as Kerouack wrote in a "jazz" style...their words, syntax, had a bit of "swing" to it.

I agree, hard to classify, a lot of crappy novelty stuff. I do like
Lord Buckley for spoken word hippness. Musically...I guess I would sorta
consider Gerry Mulligan, Mingus, Charlie Parker, Sun Ra...as beatnik
or beat writer influenced. I dunno.

This is a nice diversion from my arguments with my co-workers over the last
eight weeks....Favre versus Packers. I was on the Favre side...sorta like
sticking up for hippie music :)
At least I was right on the football argument.

yeah, those musicians sound about right. I am also a huge fan of Butterfield blues band, and Charlie Musselwhite as well. And, Wayne Cochrane and the CC riders as well as Blood, sweat and tears....(a lot of those bands were the templates for the "blues Brothers").

Well this is turning out pretty well. I take back all of my rude comments,
and can agree with many of your points. I always bristle over the "hippie"
thing. I guess that's because I WAS a half-assed hippie....but I never
stunk and never inhaled...and always sat in real furniture. I can identify
with a few of your comments since I seem to recall a few girls who used the
hippie scent to smell clean. I have also known jazz buffs who could have used
a shower.

The "what is Tiki" arguments have always and always be a part of this forum. There really is not one established "right" answer, but I tend to support the vision and explanation of people like Sven (Bigbrotiki) who look at tiki as a uniquely mid-century phenonenum.

If you want to have some real fun, go over to the martial arts talk forums and check out the "MMA vs. TMA" threads. (Modern mixed martial arts VS. Traditional martial arts)...oh man, the name calling, death threats...it gets so intense at time that they have what is known as "meet-ups" which are essentially challenge matches..and of course the results are posted on youtube.

We should have tiki meet-ups where people throw their favorite mugs at each other. Of course, I would lose as I only own three paltry mugs and my Squid pendant (which I will always treasure and would not throw at anyone).

I would get killed in a mug-battle too....I just have a few....thanks to
Benzart and Hodad Hank. This "Mickey Hart" thread will probably get a lot
less looking..... now that it seems us old hippies don't have to send
Squeaky Fromme after you and Boris.

I still like the idea of a thread titled "Questionable Tiki Lounge Music
That Vigor Hates!"

Yea we generated a lot of views....for a few passionate music peeps spilling their
guts....I think I've posted more in the past two days than in the previous 6 months.
I probably should get back over to the carving thread where I belong. Its a good
thing that Hanford kept his distance and let us fight it out :)

And for the record....I don't think Mickey Hart is the new Buffett...like I
saw posted on "shout." I think it is fun to toss out a few ideas to see what
people think...but I am respectful of the general concept behind "tiki music"
and why we have a place to discuss it.

I don't want to get this all revved up again, but I actually have a cd
of Fankhauser, and it really sucks. I have a huge cd collection of famous and
obscure 60s garage rock bands (Count V, The Litter, Seeds, The Brogues, The Sonics,
etc) and I picked up a copy of Merrell's Fapardokly because it was supposed
to be "essential." Now this guy was and still seems to be a hippie. But I agree
that the You Tube video is pretty funny. One of my co-workers (car dealership...
close offices) was actually strolling around singing the song.

I just watched "so you think you can dance", and they were playing a Mickey Hart song which I actually quite enjoyed. It did not sound hippy in the least, and was a darn sight better then that grateful dead tripe!

I haven't seen the show but I guess they used "frog dance" from the Planet
Drum "Supralingua" cd a few weeks ago. It's quite representative of all of
the Planet Drum or Global Drum Project music.
