Being in the U.S., I hadn't any exposure to the Hula Hawaiians as, unlike the Waikikis, their music didn't seem to filter into the U.S. I came across a cassette of theirs at at a used record shop some years ago while living in Portland and thought they were AWESOME..although for some reason I had thought they were German. Since then, I've gotten a few LPs of their from Ebay, again, as I NEVER seen to actually SEE any of their LPs in any record shops. But, if anyone is interested, I absolutely HIGHLY recommend the Bear Family CD compilation put out a few years ago. it has 30-something tracks on it & i just love their European-style (German, really) ATTACK on the steel guitar..very aggressive & unlike the melodious Native Hawaiian style. It's a great listen.

just ordered their bear family CD

should arrive in a few days... can't wait !

Aloha,

I was told by a HH fan and collector that two of the original members still playing regularly in their own "hula club" in Basel as the "hula hawaiian-memories". they are on stage for nearly sixty years !!
The other HH members are unfortunately already deceased.

Kaiwaza, I definitely agree,
the Bear family compilation CD is fantastic !
I keep my eyes open to find their original vinyl records.
from time to time they can be found at flea markets and thrift shops here.

HT

That's GREAT to hear they are still playing!! Another group I would LOVE to find out more about (or ANYTHING really)would be the Waikikis out of Belgium. I guess they were more of a studio band, but I grew up really enthralled by their music and woud love to learn more about the band members.

Aloha Folks,

P

Mahalo for sharing those.
Love the early photographs of the band.

Kind of funny to see "Die Hula Hawaiians" on the cover.

One of those strange German - English word similarities that have no common root, "Die" is either the female definite article, or in the this case, the plural definite article in the German language. I used to read a newspaper called "Die Zeit" which translates to "The Times" and never think anything about it - until I became half American. Now when I see Germanized names like "Die Beatles" in print, I think "What did they DO to you!?"
