Name:Hawaiian Room Description: evidence from the book "aloha america: hula circuits through the u.s. empire," suggests that there is a direct relationship between the hawaiian room in the hotel lexington in NYC http://www.tikicentral.com/viewtopic.php?topic=32416&forum=2 and the hawaiian room at the emerson hotel in baltimore: "Te Moana Makolo was part of the last group of Lexington dancers in the early 1960s, becoming the lead choreographer of the show. She, too, had an itinerant career as a professional hula dancer. After the Hawaiian Room closed in 1966, she opened a Hawaiian room at the Emerson Hotel in Baltimore, Maryland, and continued on an overseas USO circuit with the performer Johnny Kaonohi Pineapple in the early 1970s." http://books.google.com/books?id=AgH9xngze1cC&pg=PA207&lpg=PA207&dq=%22te+Moana+Makolo%22&source=bl&ots=1ClAG4ribc&sig=_owqzHg60DseWXL_EjSqfEqGd3k&hl=en&sa=X&ei=UTyeUPHaFI3D0AHH7oG4Aw&ved=0CEAQ6AEwAg#v=onepage&q&f=false [ Edited by: Johnny Dollar 2012-11-10 03:55 ] |

ok here is the lowdown - as mentioned by the motive person in this thread - http://www.tikicentral.com/viewtopic.php?topic=9160&forum=1&vpost=654110 , the son of the newsworthy performers at the hawaiian room at the emerson hotel in baltimore, has created a facebook page for the hawaiian room and is posting scanned photos of its history, a few at a time. so like the page, and follow it, and add stuff if you have anything to add! https://www.facebook.com/pages/Hawaiian-Room-Emerson-Hotel-Baltimore/386064614799098?fref=ts in the meantime, here are more photos. seems like Ihilani, of The Voice of the South Pacific, was one of the early performers at the hawaiian room! LP images added to jog your memory.
thanks for the images from the facebook page, from the thread about the south pacific in florida http://www.tikicentral.com/viewtopic.php?topic=13068&forum=2 , and from lpcoverlover.com.

Aaaah, Ihilani on Tiki Records - must be one of my all time coveted albums! Wonderful to see what continues to be found when one focuses in on just one example of Polynesian pop. Also further proof that if someone would do concentrated research about Polynesian floorshow performers, interesting material would be unearthed, as they travelled from one Tiki temple to another: http://www.tikicentral.com/viewtopic.php?topic=41154&forum=1 |

this was added to the first post of this thread too, but based on a photo from the hawaiian room, emerson hotel, facebook page, Auntie Te Moana Makolo danced at both the hawaiian room, lexington hotel, and the hawaiian room, emerson hotel. a little google-fu revealed this: the book "aloha america: hula circuits through the u.s. empire," suggests that there is a direct relationship between the hawaiian room in the hotel lexington in NYC http://www.tikicentral.com/viewtopic.php?topic=32416&forum=2 and the hawaiian room at the emerson hotel in baltimore: "Te Moana Makolo was part of the last group of Lexington dancers in the early 1960s, becoming the lead choreographer of the show. i had the opportunity to buy this original photo from the baltimore sun newspaper, dated 1967, of the emerson hotel with the sign for the hawaiian room prominently displayed at the intersection of calvert and baltimore streets. first, overall 8x10 scan, then detail of the sign.

interesting... yesterday i bought a skull mug through craigslist for the hawaiian room. the previous owner had bought it at the hawaiian room in 1959 or 1961 when visiting with his brother. they were both "in the service." compare this one (the smaller, whiter one with the OTAGIRI markings) with the other one, which is more beige and larger, although possibly from the same scuplt. the text on the whiter, smaller skull is the "chop suey" font that matches the font on the angry bearded mug. i looked on ooga-mooga, and all the cataloged examples of this skull have the larger blocky letters like the one on the larger, beige skull.

This is an awesome piece of historical research! I just obtained one of the moa swizzle sticks from the Hawaiian Room - along with a bunch of Tiki mugs from the same family. Three of them are unmarked but look very much like the tiki with his hands on his tummy in the images posted above. I wonder if they might be "lost" (unmarked) Hawaiian room mugs? Ill post an image if I cant find the same mug on Oooga Mooga. |

As posted in the Ren Clark thread...the mystery behind the Ren logo at the HR/Emerson was probably due to the fact they were both owned by the Weissberg Corp, after Ren sold out in Ft Worth in 1961. |
