Crappy xmas eve party: now less crappy, with 100% less moving, and the Star Wars Holiday Special!

Here's how crappy: it's not even really a party, it's a cheap trick to get help unloading my moving crates. F$*!ing Door-to-Door Storage hasn't been answering any of the messages I've been leaving for them for a week, and now they can't get my stuff to my new apartment until Christmas Eve. I've got a call out to a moving staffing company to see if they'll be able to get me a couple of guys to help, but since it's a holiday, I don't know yet if it's doable. I don't have a lot of stuff, but there's plenty of things that are too big/heavy for me to move myself -- if anyone knows of a moving company that won't charge an arm & a leg to work on the holiday, that would be ideal. However, since there may be someone out there who's facing spending the holiday sad & alone, you now have the option of spending it sad & with me. We can make some hot buttered rum & get all hopped up on Christmas candy, and sing naughty carols while we unload. Once we have the TV unloaded, we can watch sappy xmas movies. I have Emmett Otter's Jug Band Christmas, Robbie the Reindeer, the Star Wars Christmas special, and all sorts of other semi-crappy xmas videos. The crates are supposed to arrive between 8 & 11am, so we'll likely be done by 3pm at the very, very latest. Anyone? Anyone?? Wondering if that would be a part of your move-in? I use to live in Redondo; and the strand brings back many memories. You are definately going to enjoy your new home (geographicaly), and it may be a "mental shock" when it actually rains there some day(from Seattle). I will be down that way for the holidays with family and would love to share a holiday buttered rum with a fellow Tcer (also while visiting family, you must have an outlet). Not sure if they charge xtra for xmas eve. They charge around $15-16 per hour per person with a four hour minimum. You can cut them loose early but still have to pay the minimum. If you don't like who they send you have to pay a one hour minimum. The good thing is that includes workers compensation and liability insurance. We used 2 guys to help my sister move and they moved the heaviest stuff, upstairs, etc. they were done early so she had them rearrange furniture several times. You have to fill put a report card for them so they are motivated to do a good job. Of course it would be more fun to have a TC friend to help, but a good option anyway. Good luck and Happy Holidays!

I just lined everything up with Labor Ready -- I'd gotten a quote from another service, but it was twice what Labor Ready is going to charge. What a relief! I won't have seen my belongings in nearly two months, so it's going to be like the best Xmas present ever. The good parts of the day are still there, if anyone wants to take me up on that offer. I actually have had the Star Wars holiday special (with the original commercials!) for years now, but I haven't watched it yet. I've been saving it for a special occasion, and it looks like this is it. The movers will probably be done by 2 or 3pm, so anytime after that would be fine. I'm in West LA, on S. Beverly Glen near Olympic Blvd, in case anyone is going to be in the neighborhood and feels like popping in for a bit. No rsvp needed, just give a holler at (206) 349-1362 if you want to swing by.

While I have no intention to disparage the folks who are trying hard enough to do day labor, the Labor Ready guys are often terminally under-or-unemployed and slightly scary. You might feel more comfortable if you're not alone with a bunch of strangers on Christmas Eve. :)

We hired help thru a similar company when re-working fixtures at a retail store where I worked. The full staff was there with me and I STILL felt a bit uneasy (mostly about my wallet). Plus, having extra friends around is also having an extra set of EYES there to be in more than one place at once- such as one in the home & one by the truck. You tend to lose less stuff that way. -Z

Fun Fact: my highschool sweetheart's mother was a prostitute, and his stepfather was on work release for selling crack. I used to run in a much rougher crowd. I wound up going on a date Xmas Eve, and I've been working nonstop since then (worked 'til midnight Christmas, and from 5:45am-midnight yesterday; I'm off to work again right now). I told the fellas I'm working with that I'll need Thursday morning off at least, because I plan on being quite hungover. I may not get a proper day off until next weekend. I'm going to be looking at cardboard for a while. Since there was so much interest in the Star Wars Holiday Special (geeks!), you guys want me to give a shout once I've got it unpacked? p.s. - One of my guys spoke English, but I think it would have been better if they both spoke Spanish -- the English speaking fellow was pretty incompetent, but the Spanish speaking guy knew what he was doing. They needed to speak to each other more than they need to speak to me.
