Havana Club 3 is my fav white rum, AppletonX & Matusalem15 are my fav drinking rums, the Barrel Proof is best sipping rum, Trader Vics Dark I like much better than Myers', the Tahitian is pretty unique (fruitcake-like), St. Elmo is only for cooking rum cakes, Bacardi Select is the worst--I'll probably have this bottle forever, Hana Bay reminds me of Hawaii and the Lemonhart is my new everyday rum.

I too bought it originally for the Bottle,
and I needed a dark rum.

I found/read on the tag that is made the Mexican way of making rum.
not the Cuban way. I don't know the difference.
but I like it.
its dark, and tastes great.
but its not overly sweet or molasasy , kinda dry for a dark.

Wood's is fantastic... ask any Royal Navy veteran what they drink and that is probably the brand they come up with.

I never heard of Woods, sounds interesting... any place to get this in San Francisco?

I've never seen it in the States. I used to get mine at the duty free whenever I stopped over at London Heathrow. But lately they have not stocked it there. :(

Sounds a lot like Lemon Hart, both British Navy Demeraras, but Woods is strong at 57%. Any taste comparisons?

It looks and tastes darker, more molasses-like. I like sipping it with one cube of ice, to take the edge off. None of that sissy sweet or dry stuff. Rummy tasting rum. Yum.

But Lemon Hart is equally good, just a little different, more "golden". I would be hard pressed to favor one for the other. I would drink both. :D

A bit of both really...

It's the only Export strength Rum that is sold as a common 'main-line' spirit in England.

An 'Old School' tipple would be equal measures of Woods and Peppermint Cordial, known as a Rum and Pep.

Kinda strayed of into the Wood's. Well I started this thread and have not yet put my own selection on until now. It was allot better awhile ago but as work slowed down the rum went down as well. Still some good in there and some not so good but it works.

i see Brugal & Mount Cay a lot but never tried... how are they?

I am definitely an underachiever when it comes to drinking; my meager supply is a bottle of Cruzan 2 yo, half a bottle of Kraken, and a bottle of Bacardi 151 that I bought to light my tiki torch mug. Perhaps I can serve as a bad example :lol:

Only thing I really miss here in Sweden is a good but cheaper alternative to Appleton Extra 12. Now I have to use the 12 for any drink that calls for Dark Jamaican. Oh, and we don't have any 151 proof rums here either but I've stocked up on those so I'm good for years to come.

Klas, you are fortunate that you seem to be able to freely get Havana Club rums. Here in the US we have to deal with a trade embargo, and Cuban Havana Club products are very hard to come by.

I'm with you Klas, to be able to get an 'everyday' dark Jamaican that is good in almost all situations (like Coruba) in the EU would be good. I regularly switch between Appleton 12 / 8 / VX / Myers depending on the drink - VX or Myers getting the most use, the 8 & 12 being used less.

AceExplorer, the Havana Club rums are good but there really are some equally fine alternatives available.

I forgot that we also have Myers's here but I only use it for drinks that explicitly calls for it. The Appleton V/X isn't really an alternative for dark Jamaican in my book but more of a gold rum. I find it really ridiculous that our government monopoly liquor stores offers a selection of 260 different rums but only have two dark Jamaican's in the lower price class (Captain Morgan and Myers's).

Being in the San Francisco area I have pretty good access to a lot of good rums, though if anyone knows where I might pick up some Lemon Hart 80 proof I’d be obliged. I’ve actually tried a lot of the more recommended whites like Fluer de Cana and 10 Cane but so far as I can tell there’s not much call for them in most tiki drinks, Cruzan is cheaper by a mile and maintains the same taste profile in mixed drinks.

This is not true. J Wray Overproof is a bit of an acquired taste, but it is a unique rum that definitely has a well-deserved place in a rum bar.

I'll second that. While I wouldn't take it straight, I dig J Wray Overproof. It has a wonderful banana/fruity smell, and adds a great edge to many cocktails/punches. Recently I made the Appleton Estates punch with one fifth each or Appleton V/X, Coruba and J Wray Overproof, which I heartily recommend. It brings the FUNK

W&N is what it is, a strong white Jamaican rum. It isn't called for & so does not 'fit' tiki recipes but it is a distinctive product that can work well in other cocktails... pour with a light touch & it goes a long way.

I also agree, don't mess with it neat!

Alas, I've been doing it exactly backwards: I'M the rum snob that comes 'round bearing the good stuff.

At any rate, I like the idea of doing a menu for my home bar. My wife and those whom I've offsprung will roll their collective eyes in unison, but that's just a side benefit. So, basically, I'm swiping this idea.

Inventory-wise I have -- and since I am going strictly off-memory here, like they say on C-SPAN "I reserve the right to revise and extend my remarks." -- the following, in the order in which I remember it:

1- Bacardí Carta Blanca (1.75L, barely 2-3oz left) UPDATED 7/16/14 - FINISHED. Will likely replace it with Barbancourt White, which is an in-all-but-name Rhum Agricole
2- Cruzan Aged Light (1.75L)
3- Tortuga Gold (about ½ of the 750ml) Will likely replace with Chairman's Reserve or Plantation Grand Reserve
4- Bacardí 8
5- Bacardí whatever it is they are calling their "black" rum these days (about ¼ of the bottle left) Will likely replace with Coruba or maybe Kohala Bay if I can dig that up.
6- Flor de Caña 7
7- Flor de Caña 12
8- Doorly XO (2 bottles)
9- El Dorado 5
10- Kirkland (i.e. Costco) Spiced Rum (What? Shut up.)
11- Myers Dark (375ml)

Here are the 53 different rums & rhums I currently have in my collection. I don't have any friends so I have to buy them myself, but on the up side I get to drink them myself! I've run out of storage space since I have many other spirits besides rum, don't have a bar and try to keep my collection discrete, so further additions will require deletions. As you can see I have stocked up on a few of my favorites that are no longer distributed in the states. I'd like to buy a few more of the Lemon Hart 151 "New Label" while it is still available since nearly every drink I make uses it but that would be difficult for my wife to accept so donations are welcome!

I'm jealous of the Havana Club and hoping we get Cuban rum soon now that the embargo is relaxed.

I have about 60 bottles of rum.

I like Cruzan, Flor de Cana and Appleton for silver rum.

For flavored rums, i go with Cruzan where I can (Bacardi O because I can't find the Cruzan orange anymore). The coconut and banana are my favorites.

For dark, my favorite is Coruba, but I also keep Gosling's, Myers's, Whalers and Cruzan blackstrap when I can.

For spiced, definitely Kraken. I have El Dorado Demerara and still have a couple bottles of Lemonhart, which I treasure, especially the 80 proof Jamaican.

For gold and aged rum, I have a wide variety. Appleton 12 and VX are my favorites, with Mount Gay Eclipse also being a standout.

The two I most dislike are Bacardi or Captain Morgan.

My supply has really refined itself lately. I hope to refine it even further when a few undesirables finish up (the Bacardi's, Don Q, and Seven Tiki). I do like to keep one spiced rum hanging around, but not sure which one deserves the spot.

Thanks to tips from many of you I've gradually built up to something like this. Besides the obvious ones - the El Dorados, Hamiltons, Coruba - the rums I've really been surprised by are the Plantation White, which is now my go to white, and the Barbancourt, which is going fast as I keep making Port au Prince's.

Kudos to you, Mike, for the impressive list and -- for having Stroh's! That's such a maligned rum, but its essential to making some of the Frankie's Tiki Room concoctions.

I just counted and I have at least 86 rums in my collection (not including doubles and back stock). I didn't think it was that many. I think at this point I will always be trying new sippers, and will start culling out my mixers until I have a stable few that are acceptable in most situations.

Ones I won't keep (maybe) Dictador 20, Botran reserve, st Theresa, Zacapa and other solera styles just don't work for me, goslings and Kohala bay (Coruba works fine), fleur de Cana (maybe if they start putting the word 'year' on the bottle I won't feel like I'm being ripped off, white agricoles like st george and Dillion's and the lower proof clement, any high end mount gay, other agricoles like st James and Brugal.

KHS - That Angostura #1 is great. How did you get the Colonial?

The St. George is hopelessly unsippable and I won't miss it when I run out, but I like to mix it into drinks like the Polynesian Paralysis; it goes well with orange juice. I ended up mail ordering the colonial because it's only available at one wine shop in California.

Flor de Cana is a good white mixer (the 4 year) - what do you prefer? I think it is better than cruzan at roughly the same price point

Five Banks and Cana Brava are better, however higher price points
