Hello Everyone,
My name is Jamie, this is my fist time posting here. I've been a fan of tiki and this site for a couple years now. Anyways I just wanted to share a couple photos of an Orchids of Hawaii inspired lamp I built for one of my buddies. Let me know what you guys think and thanks for looking!

This is a wall in my bathroom.

So I personally think you've made the most beautiful lamp ever made. Wendy

that's a terrific lamp. i'd like to see one with tikis.

T

Thanks for the compliments Wendy and Kingstiedye. Wendy your bathroom wall looks great. Kingstiedye I'll have to do one with a tiki soon. I have a few more seahorse lamps to finish first.

Jamie

K

Aloha!

Killer lamp Jamie!!! Here's a shot of it hanging in my garage. Excellent craftsmanship. Jamie is a solid artist that has made some excellent art. I hope he keeps posting stuff he's done, because you'll definitely appreciate it!

Cheers!
Woody

T

Woody,
Thanks for the compliment and nice words! It means a lot hearing that from the master tiki lamp artist.

That lamp looks vintage! Very impressive work! Will you be making more?

Great lamp! Please share more of your art!

T

Thanks for the compliments Big Kahuna and SandraDee! Here's a photo of another seahorse lamp I did with a different style top. If anyone is interested in having me make them one let me know.
Thanks for looking,
Jamie

T

Here's another one I am working on. This one is a 4 panel, 2 palms and 2 pineapples.
Thanks for looking,
Jamie

Awesome! These lamps you and Woody make are even better than OOH lamps in my opinion.

Is the bar/space in this photo your home or are you at Notch's bar? Just wondering!

Very kool

T

Thank you!
That's my home bar in the background. It's been a work in progress for the past couple years. I'll post some photos soon.

Welcome to TC...nice work...looking forward to seeing your bar.

T

Here's a in progress photo of another lamp I am building for a customer and some shots of my home bar....
Thanks for looking!

Great looking like and love the bar decor!

Thanks Dale

T

Hello,
I wanted to share a couple pics of my work. The first one is of a lamp I threw together over the weekend and the 2nd pic is a sketch of an idea I came up...a blowfish in a bottle. Progress photos coming soon.

Thanks for looking!
Jamie

Gorgeous lamp, Jamie! It's so different than what's out there, yet still very tiki!

Sandra

T

Thank you, Sandra! I was trying to come up with something original instead of copying lamps that have already been done. :D

T

It is a cool lamp.
Look at Sven's home bar page you will get ideas there.

I think some aging could help, or just wait 10 years.
May be you could place it in a bar in an Indian casino when people can smoke.
Used to own on of the smokingest restaurant diners in town but did not make lights then, could
have aged them in a week there.
My sister would smoke in the ladies room and the walls were yellow, would age in two days there, HA!

Would love to see the blow fish light come to life.
I have a book where I put all my crazy ideas for lights in, it helps me remember as
it can be many years before I get to them, if ever.

Keep it up!!!

T

Thanks Skip!

Your work is amazing! I really dig your float lamps, the nets that you tie are insane! I need to get one for my bar one of these days.
I'll do a search for Sven's bar. I am sure it's very inspiring. All that talk about cigarette smoke and aging reminded me of a Seinfeld episode I just watched. Ha ha! I'll try to post some progress pics of the blowfish lamp this week....if it turns out decent enough to share. Ha!

Jamie

T

Thanks, not doing much these days.

I leave cork outside in my pond to age it.
The chain can soak in salt water,
Shellac and fire are a big help in aging too.
Bleach will give you that total white out thing going on.

Even the old tribe type people used to use dirt and fire, coal, ash ect as a paint of sorts.
It's the small touches that make these things come together.

Good luck!!

I feel the same way about trying to come up with something original too, Jamie. When I paint tiki bars in my paintings, I always think "instead of putting in another puffer fish lamp, is there something more original I can come up with?" Then I end up painting lanterns instead, ha!
Sandra

T

Skip,
Thanks for the aging tips! I'll have to go out to my lab and do some experimenting later today. Below is a pic of a OA Kooboo lamp I scored on eBay. I think your version of the lamp blows theirs away!

Sandra,
I think if you put pufferfish in all your paintings they would still be original because your style is so unique and one of a kind!

T

Here's a photo of a panel that I poured yesterday for another lamp. This one is going to be hexagon shaped with 6 volcano panels.

T

The 6 volcano panels look good Tiki501.
So what if you put a main light in your 6 volcano panel light of say 40 watt
or lower, and then right in the volcano lava area you put a flicker flame bulb
right behind each of your six panels.
Behind the panels it might show through, would need to do a test first.
Or even one of those blinking Christmas lights you know the C7s 4 watt.
But his could add life to your volcanos.

Here's some info you may use.
Go to thrift stores, antique shows ect... and look for old light fixtures and part them out.
Here's a photo of what I got for Three dollars.
Just the 10 feet of chain would cost that much.
Plus when you do this most of the aging is done as this stuff IS old, not new and shiny.
Now I don't reuse old wire or the sockets even if they look good really
it's just wise to get new on those, plus when I sell my lights they sell better if
I can say all new sockets and wiring.

Show photos of your light when done.
Keep em coming.

T

I like the flickering bulb. Idea, Skip!
My dad found me some vintage swag chain and lamp parts at an estate sale not too long ago. What a difference compared to the new stuff I get at the hardware store, lol.

Jamie = Tiki501. We love our lamp. Your craftsmanship is outstanding. I should have found your thread sooner. I hope to see it often with more of your work.

tikiskip that was really terrific advice. Wendy

T

Thanks, Wendy!!!! :)

Kooboo is a type of rattan.
It bends very well for the most part.

Per Franks cane and rush.....
Kooboo rattan is a class of processed, strong, and pliable rattan that is light in weight and firm in texture. This round rattan can be used in basketry, but is more frequently employed for spokes and handles. It is also ideal for rattan furniture repair. Actual yield of feet per pound varies greatly on all natural rattans due to differences in density from lot to lot.

Buy it and see it here.........
http://www.franksupply.com/bamboo/rattan-poles.html

T

Thanks for the info, Skip! I actually ordered rattan from them before. I tried making one of those hats that some of the Orchids lamps came with, but it didn't turn out so well. Ha ha!
I made a little bit of progress on the pufferfish beachcomber lamp. I was able to cut the bottom off the gallon jug and test fit the puffer...it's a perfect fit! Here's a photo...

T

Too bad you can't find cork that large any more.
Here is a light that I put wood on the bottom.
Tried to give it a Witco like look.
Don't know who wound up with that one.

T

Cool looking lamp, Skip! You did a great job on the base.

For my puffer lamp I am going to make a base that resembles a piece of a broken shipping crate.

T
T

Thanks for the link Skip! I'll try to pick one up this weekend!

T

A little more progress. Just trying to figure out which bottle looks better, the green or the clear....

T

I like em both but maybe clear a bit more.

Don't forget to do some fancy rope tying so you give some interest to the rope as it
goes up the sides of that light.
Four strands of rope just going up the sides is going to be boring, right?
Look here....

And here mid page.
http://www.tikicentral.com/viewtopic.php?mode=viewtopic&topic=18485&forum=18&start=465

Good luck!!!

[ Edited by: tikiskip 2014-11-21 20:00 ]

T

Thanks Skip, I am digging the clear a little bit more too.
I wish I had a quarter of your rope tying skills! Every time I look at your work I drool like a kid in a candy store!

T
  1. Get rope.
  2. Tie rope over and over till cool rope tie is found.
  3. go on you tube and look up rope tying knots, and or get books.
Cost a few bucks and some time.
T

So did you get along with this light?
Lets see what you got!

T

I made the driftwood/shipwrecked base and tied the rope yesterday. The white rope was just to see how it was going to look, I am going to untie it and dye the rope this evening.

Very nice. Wendy

T

Looks like a good start.

That puffer lamp is awesome.

I was taking a photo of Dan and Bullet and then I saw that your lamp was in the picture. It's a centerpiece of our tiki jungle room. Love it, thank you, Wendy

T

Thanks for posting the pic, Wendy! Your jungle room looks amazing. I really like the ceiling!

I am working on a couple other "Orchids inspired" lamps. I am trying to come up with my own designs this time instead of copying stuff that has already been done in past. I am also trying to be respectful to the other lamp builders on here by not doing the same style stuff they're doing.

Here are some pics of a few panel inlays I made...
