Yeah...I sure do miss Howard Cosell too.

Okay, so now can the 'careers' of Timberlake, Janet Jackson, (the god awful) Britney Spears, and Madonna finally come to an end now? There are other things out there worth talking about, and these folks are just holding up traffic.

This isn't about the people involved. It's about the attitude from higher up!

It's ridiculous that they get all hyped up over this incident when for years all they use is the sex sells tease gimmick in all their advertising!

Double standards.

While we're on this subject...

Is anyone else completely annoyed when any given TV channel blurs-out nudity in ART (paintings or sculpture) in the background? The most recent example (and why this complaint is fresh in my mind) was on MTV's Cribs. The subject was Rob Zombie (no relation) and he was showing his "pirate bar." Well, he had an old mermaid ship ornament (can't remember the proper term at the moment) and they blurred out the top half. It just kills me that even in non-sexual context, some people consider the human body to be so offensive.

The nude breast did not bother me at all, as I wish public nudity would be more accepted within the U.S. I was more bothered by the implicit borderline violence - there is a big difference between Janet baring her breast herself and having a male rip clothing off of her in front of cheering thousands.

I think that the NFL and MTV should do another Super Bowl Halftime show next year. They can have as the main attraction the reunited DEVO, as they perform 'Whip It' with its disrobing by bullwhip imagery.

MTV needs to go away and take all that stupid music that they play with it. It's the same four videos in between bad exploitative programing all day long.

I always thought that Superball Fans would be more stoked with seeing real bands during halftime anyway. Not some 'machine made' star lipsyncing and dancing around to souless drum machine music. Oh, and the boob incident. That was rad. In a sad kinda way. Just a testament to a pop star's last grasp at relevency

Susane-

This is about the higher ups for sure, but it certainly doesn't exempt the people involved. C'mon now. They know exactly (well who knows in this case) what they're doing. And let's be frank...they're music AND so-called talent sucks. I mean it really sucks. Lowest common denominator FOR SURE. The fact that they get all the exposure (no pun) is definitely due to the higher ups.

You know, I'm not offended by nudity or foul language. If you were born in the 60s, I think it's safe to say that you grew up in a much 'looser' world than maybe your grandparents did. What I find offensive, or should I say annoying is that alot of entertainers feel that they have to incorporate sex into their schtick to give themselves some kind of street-cred so the mainstream masses think they're cool. The more they show their tits or crotches and the more foul language they use in a FCC regulated environment makes them feel like they're pushing the envelope because after all, they are 'artists' or at leas that's what they claim to be. Keep sex or porn or whatever BLUE. Keep it underground where it used to be. Lenny Bruce, Russ Meyer, Hugh Hefner, Al Goldstein, Xavier Hollander... keep it with the adults. (and the teens looking for the stuff in dad's closet)

The millions of kids watching that performance on the Super Bowl don't need to see that stuff yet, nor do they need to see all that crap on MTV. I'm not interested in living in a world where the next generation of young people think it's cool to whip it out during 'family hour'.

That's my point!

What comes around goes around... They shove it in your face all the time to sell crap and this time it got shoved back in theirs and now they have to pay for it.

Not 60's, born in the 50's...
I don't watch TV. It's not worth wasting the electricity for.

Yeah...I totally got you point. I'm just ranting. Good to hear that you don't have aTV. The only thing that keeps me paying the cable bill around here is VH1 Classic (they show the stuff from when the 'M' in MTV actually meant something). I sound like an old crank, but you know what....I am! Maybe not old to some of you but nonetheless old-er than the totally un-proactive youth of today.

Who has ever heard of a nipple shield before all this? I thought I knew things but a nipple shield is new to me. They do look kind of cozy though. :)

I was thinking the same thing! What will they think of next. I bet they start selling these things at Hot Topic soon.

Well said, I totally agree with the angel, BUT do think a football game is no place for nudity. I feel the "garmet malfunction" was no accident. I also feel it was very violent, almost rape-like.

I don't have a problem with nudity where appropriate. I collect pin-ups and old "nudie cards" But I am a mother of a 8 year old boy. This action is not something that should be seen by kids. Even if the red lace bra had remained, I still see it as inappropriate. These people are on stage being cheered on, watched by millions, and are role models weather they like it or not.

Just in case any other parents want to send a complaint to the FCC

Oh, and nipple caps have been around for a long time.

I find it amazing that there is such a fuss about it over in the US. In Europe, nudity occurs on tv so often, you hardly notice it. Even ads can show bare breasts & arses to some extent, and usually it's for comic effect rather than as a cheesy come-on.

Last night Johnny Lydon (Rotten) called the British public "Fuing Cts" on 'I'm a Celebrity - get me out of here'. Obviously the network immediately apologised for him saying that, but civilization didn't crumble and most people next day thought it was hilarious...

Trader Woody

Prudish Americans, in an uproar over mammary glands fo cryin' out loud!
Reminds me of the Beatles song, :music: "Dear Prudence....won't you come out to play? Dear Prudence, it's a brand new day! The sun is up, the sky is blue, it's beautiful, and so are you! Dear Prudence, won't you open up your eyes!" :music:
But then again, could be the proverbial frog in the warm water story. Slowly increase the warmth of the water and the frog adapts but soon dies from the hot water. Same with values. How far can you go before it's too far?

Well, I quite agree with you there, but it's really a case of striking the right balance, I guess. When the sight of a bare breast turns a nation into hysterical mush, it would seem things are a little off-balance there. I know during my time in the States, the sight of the most fleeting glance of bosom was a cause for wild celebration. If it was a matter of course to see bare flesh on tv, it probably wouldn't have made such an impact.

What we have over here is something called the 'Watershed' time. Basically, if it's shown after 9:00pm and kids see it, it's the parents who are at fault for letting them watch, not the networks. There are limits, of course - warnings before shows where people swear or get their kit off, and no porn, etc. It seems to work ok. If anyone really does cross the line, you can be sure that the complaints will flood in.

Anyway, at least Janet Jackson brought the debate out front, so to speak!

Trader Woody

Right on Woody, if more breasts were bared more often we would all just yawn about it. Sometimes I think Americans are still livin' in the Victorian age. Look around....everybody knows that sex sells....beats the chit outta violence......now where's my woman?....I feel like I need some good lovin'........hehhehheh.....come tah papa sugardumplin'....oh you naughty girrl.

TM1

For me, the problem is not so much nudity on television, but the disgusting nature of the nudity...

A beautiful painting by a respected artist of a nude women is hardly offfensive...but the pseudo-bondage gear Ms Jackson was wearing?

that's not art!

We are living in an age when"sex and horror are the new gods" ..(to quote FGTH)
