Aloha!

Boy I have been remiss in posting updates for each new episode. Time to catch up.

Episode 49 of 5 Minutes of Rum is live - available to listen and/or download. The grab bag - Foursquare Distillery Port Cask finish rum, new cocktail tools, and a few holiday-themed recipes (told you I was behind).

By the way, the rum itself recently popped up in Southern California Total Wine stores (they sell a lot of Foursquare-afiliated rums). I don't know how long the stock will last but it's worth a look.

This is a good one - I almost bought the Cruzan Single Barrel the other day but went reliable with El Dorado 12. The only time I've had the Single Barrel is at Sam's but mixed.

Thanks! Give the Cruzan Single Barrel a try neat sometime. It's not earth-shattering, but it's a solid rum at a very decent price.

And yeah, you're not going to go wrong with the ED12.

From long time ago, not sure if its here or not but I love this cocktail and make it often.
Also, I wanted to finish up some bottles of rum, every one tasted good in this recipe.

Way back to episode 15...or the Tiki Caliente 4 room crawl. I made one myself tonight after seeing this post. Thank you!

Episode 55 of 5 Minutes of Rum is available for listening and/or downloading. Angostura 7 year old rum from Trinidad, Amaro di Angostura, and The Snakepit - 2 ways. The Snakepit is my riff on a Cobra's Fang / the Cobra's Kiss and is the drink I served on the Tiki Caliente 8 room crawl.

(You can fit like 5 servings in this monster mug, not that I recommend doing that.)

Another excellent episode. I recently bought a bottle of Amaro di Angostura in London. They were doing a tasting in the shop and we were sold very quickly. I do like a Trinidad Sour so it makes sense that I like this product as well.

Thanks - yeah I've never really explored Amari before but the Angostura version was just the kick I needed to do so. I'm enjoying it quite a bit.

You can make a Paper Plane with the Amaro, as long as you also have Aperol, bourbon, and lemon juice. It's not tiki, but definitely a good cocktail.

I have Amaro Nonino, can I use this instead of Amaro DI Angustura?

Yes, definitely. The Amaro Nonino is the preferred Amaro for the drink.

My local Total Wine has a number of Amaros, but not the Nonino. So I bought Amaro from another Italian city (can't remember which) and it works fine. But your use of the Nonino will nail the recipe as it is documented on numerous other web sites.

Sorry for the non-rum detour here, but the Paper Plane is a good sipper I had to share.

hiltiki - I just realized you may have been asking about Kevin's recipe and Amaro, not the Paper Plane. Sorry for my confusion, but it just wasn't clear when I replied, and I didn't even realize until just now.

Drinks, everybody!

5 Minutes of Amaro!

I've never tried Amaro Nonino, but half the fun is trying to see what works. I'd give it a go as a substitute for the Amaro di Angostura and see how it works. Based on the description it won't be 1 to 1 substitute, but that doesn't prevent it from tasting good.

Okole Maluna!

Episode 56 of 5 Minutes of Rum is available for listening and/or downloading. Cana Brava Reserva Aneja, Dolin Vermouth de Chambery Blanc, Lost Recipes of Prohibition, and El Presidente.

5 Minutes of Rum meets The Atomic Grog at the Tiki Tower Takeover at The Hukilau ...

Aloha Kevin! It was great to have you in South Florida.

As I type, I'm sipping The Dark Side from Episode 57. A fine addition to the snifter coffee drink canon.

Okole maluna!

Worlds collide!

Likewise Jim - Val and I had a great time and I'm happy we got to trade a few notes during the Tiki Tower Takeover and on Mai-Kai cocktails. It was a really busy weekend - hopefully I can return before too long and we can dig deeper into the Mai-Kai's cocktail history. I did get about halfway through the menu while I was there. :)

And thanks again for the extensive research and notes on The Atomic Grog.

Speaking of The Dark Magic, episode 57 of 5 Minutes of Rum is available for listening and/or downloading. Santeria rum, the technology from Lost Spirits that’s behind Santeria rum, and The Dark Side: my tribute to The Atomic Grog’s Tribute to the Mai-Kai’s Black Magic.

One of the most humorous lines to date from all of the 5 Minutes of Rum podcasts to date occurs in Episode 57 on Santeria rum. Listen at 16m 47s:

"So cheers to having options... and stuff."

Kevin, I really enjoy your podcasts!

Ha Ha! At first I thought that was an ice shell in the glass, but then I realized it was the little light-up Death Star from the drink at Disneyland... how appropriate!

I remember you taking about this recipe... hopefully we can try it out sometime, sounds delish!

It's actually an ice ball Death Star! Val has 2 Death Star ice ball molds and as you said - it just seemed appropriate. :) Thanks for the nudge on the idea and recipe!
