I don't see there error code but here's where my Hai Karate mug is now. Waiting to dry before the first of at least 2 firings 20220619_194402

Working on a new lamp now, it's a small one because I don't know how it will work out. Built a wooden box with wood panel sides and bottom. "Fissure" cut-outs in the panels 20220620_10395820220620_105852 Took a torch to the first panel and burned it to a crisp! 20220620_110221 20220620_110330 Placed the charred pieces in a mold box with some lava rocks and poured red resin over it. I hope the resin will stabilize the charred wood 20220620_152449

Thank you GROG and SpaceMonkey! Looks like it might work out, the first panel unmolded fine and seems rigid enough to support itself when attached to the box image000001

Hai Karate mug made it through the first firing with underglaze color. This is wet with water, should look like this with a clear glaze. Working on 3 coats of clear glaze tonight, should be ready to fire again tomorrow image000000

Continuing to work on my new lamp. The light fixture and bulb are installed, I have ordered a 2 inch socket extension to move the bulb to the center of the lamp image000004

Working on 2 glazed Pele figures that will help spice up the blank ends of the lamp. image000003

All three resin panels are cast and attached to the lamp image000001image000000

Last night I got the error code when a new page was ready to start. All I had to do was post on the page before one more time and it flipped to the new page. All is well.

Your tiki patio is wonderful and the light with the name to match is special.

Dan looked at your Hai Karate mug and asked me if they were still making it! I told him it was your new mug. Very cool.

Wendy, I remember that the old Tiki Central would do that error on a new page sometimes too.

Thanks Wendy, I bet Dan wore Hai Karate back in the day and had to fight off the ladies LOL

I have wanted a porthole with a TV screen behind it but didn't have a good wall to mount it on, so I decided to use the ceiling instead. My patio roof has exposed ceiling joists so I have room to stash a TV.

Didn't want to buy a $100 brass porthole so I made one from particle board instead. Inner diameter is 12 inches, outer diameter is 19". I cut some blocks and tabs for the hinge & latches, added bolts, nuts, and washers 291225464_3350084008570032_942594677922892147_nImage Missing: https://tikicentral.com/resize.php/uploads/8801/62c4a4a50c82f.jpg?w=1280&h=1280&fit=max&sharp=5&s=2e03f1f9c488aa230a9a0763fd4852dd

Working on some GIANT Chinese Jade Tiles. Thinking of ideas for ceiling decor and decided to make some 4x sized tiles (2x2 feet instead of 1x1) Ceramic would weigh a ton so I'm using MDF (wood) instead. The plan is to make 4 tiles and mount them in a 5x5 foot bamboo frame.

Started by drawing out 1/8 of a tile 20220711_131530Image Missing: https://tikicentral.com/resize.php/uploads/8801/62cf14ba90d5f.jpg?w=1280&h=1280&fit=max&sharp=5&s=506a1d192b1f02d2f1f1b397d478ef5e

More work on my Giant Tile project. Picked up some bamboo from a local bamboo nursery. About 1.75 - 2 inches in daimeter. 1Image Missing: https://tikicentral.com/resize.php/uploads/8801/62d74875ea5d6.jpg?w=1280&h=1280&fit=max&sharp=5&s=3433c9261c26b96a965f03b41d6155cc

I read AFTER my other bamboo project that you are supposed to treat bamboo to prevent insect infestation later. One of the methods was heat treating. I drilled a small hole in each internode to prevent the bamboo from exploding when heated. Then took a big propane blowtorch to it. As I understand the heat kills any existing bugs/eggs and also destroys the natural sugars in the bamboo that attract insects later. 2Image Missing: https://tikicentral.com/resize.php/uploads/8801/62d7499a14501.jpg?w=1280&h=1280&fit=max&sharp=5&s=a46287ff3c9ba6d63c991e13d6eb15a1

Cut the treated bamboo to size and notched them so they fit flush together 3Image Missing: https://tikicentral.com/resize.php/uploads/8801/62d74a1eb5f50.jpg?w=1280&h=1280&fit=max&sharp=5&s=2d9837003bb075db34c2bbfb579822734Image Missing: https://tikicentral.com/resize.php/uploads/8801/62d74a1ee1db5.jpg?w=1280&h=1280&fit=max&sharp=5&s=845453bc25d01664c7dc2aa603979161

I arranged the frame around the tiles and bolted them together. 8 wooden "bridges" screw into the back of the tiles and into plastic anchors in the bamboo. This keeps a space between the tiles and the frame. The "bridges" are painted dark brown to blend into the ceiling. (this is the ugly backside) 5Image Missing: https://tikicentral.com/resize.php/uploads/8801/62d74b4931cff.jpg?w=1280&h=1280&fit=max&sharp=5&s=403a6225cd80d205eb65186ebece94bb

Mike, Bamboo Ben tells me the heat treating won't kill the eggs of bamboo mites, that a borax/boric acid soak is necessary for that. On the bright side, as far as I can tell, bamboo mites are only found in California and Florida at this time. So we've got that going for us!

PP Image Missing: https://tikicentral.com/resize.php/uploads/82095/624db20eb0169.jpg?sharp=10&fit=crop&w=96&h=96&s=0904428c62184e25eb190aa7d8259363

Your giant tiles look stellar! I've never worked with MDF before, but this is tempting me. My understanding is that MDF's big weakness is moisture--it does not hold up in humid environs--but that's obviously not a concern from your standpoint.

D Image Missing: https://www.gravatar.com/avatar/02fda1af943fa800b4526bf84202312a?d=blank&s=192&fit=fill

I didn't know there were bugs in bamboo. I'm glad I don't have any! Beautiful tile work. You make the best tiki projects.

M Image Missing: https://www.gravatar.com/avatar/b9f394dc69a9134df062764ec9564ebf?d=blank&s=192&fit=fill

Wait, I live in California!!! LOL I heated the crap out of that bamboo, I can't imagine anything survived in there. Hopefully Ben was wrong (but like likely)

That MDF is fun to work with. I'm concerned about moisture too. We are pretty dry here 10 months of the year but I have misters in my patio. I gave it a couple good coats of exterior latex, I hope that helps.

Wendy, I didn't know about bugs in bamboo until recently. Thanks for the kind words Wendy, I'm very happy with the way this project turned out

Wow- not only a very cool- and out of the box, idea, but the execution even better!

I had no idea MDF could be carved/ routed- I would think you just need to be careful with all of the particles released since it's made up of so much.... stuff?

Great job on the bamboo frame as well, love it!
