This month's episode of A Moment of Tiki is now live on the YouTubes! I take a look at black velvet art--a popular tiki decor element everywhere--and discuss Edgar Leeteg and Ralph Burke Tyree, the most influential practitioners of the 20th century.

Cool, this is perfect timing. I spotted these beauties just yesterday in The Colony at the "Limin' Lounge." Any idea who this artist is, based on the signature? IMG_9232IMG_9233IMG_9234IMG_9235

Good question, Solomon! I do not know. Those all look to me like more modern paintings. Jason (Boozy Doodler) is the only black velvet artist I know personally, although there are several scattered around the country. I'm going to poke around a bit and see if I can figure this one out.

Episode 72 of A Moment of Tiki is now live on the YouTubes. This time out I visit Pineapple Parlor and I have to say that Galveston finally has a legit tiki experience! Highly recommended!

This time out artist Tony Canepa drops by the Lagoon of Mystery to discuss the creative process that goes into designing original mugs, glassware, menus, swizzle sticks and other accoutrements for such tiki bars as Hidden Harbor, Inside Passage and Tiki Tatsu-Ya.

Trader Mort's Liquor, located in San Diego, boasts a distinctive tiki mascot carved by the late, great Eli Hedley. In my never-ending quest to increase the tiki population in the Lagoon of Mystery, I've decided to try my hand at recreating this unique character. It's an instantly-recognizable tiki design that offers technical challenges I've never attempted before--which is what I'm looking for in order to improve my carving skills. So come along and watch as I power carve my way through this latest project.

But wait! That's not all--it's Mele Kalikimaka season, friends! As I've done in the past, I have carved three hand-crafted holiday ornaments to give away! That means three chances for you to win one. I'll be giving away on YouTube, another on Instagram and a third on Facebook (links below). Good luck, and happy holidays!
