Salt Cedar

Pages: 1 1 replies

Hey all,
Has anyone had any experience with Salt Cedar? I picked up (pun) a 5' long, 13-1/2" in dia. salt cedar log yesterday. It must weigh about 375-400 lbs. It took 3 of us (one being a 6'4" 240 lb guy....he makes about 2 of me, the other being my wife) to get it out of the truck and into my back yard without any trips to the ER. It's probably full of water, which when its dry should lose about 80 lbs.
It seems like a solid chunk of wood, but I assume it will change when dried out.
Let me know what I'm in for.
Good luck to everyone out there in this crappy economy.

Nah, it is trash, drop it off at my house and I'll get rid of it Properly for you. :)
Not really, you have a Beautiful piece of wood there. I would de-bark it and let it dry, covered and off the ground or in a garge for 6 months. Otherwise it Will split pretty good on you. Do you have smaller pieces there in the background? If so play with one of those and you'll see the beauty and the carving characteristics. It should be easy carving wood using sharp tool. Fairly soft and with typical Cedar "Chippiness".
Keep us updated!
