Enchanted Tiki Room - The Movie?

Not bad for a CG kid flick. When I opened the DVD cover I found the usual brochure for new Disney movies inside. One caught my eye - "ToonTown - The Movie". Imagine that, a Disney movie inspired by a Disneyland ride inspired by a Disney movie. Then it stuck me. Disneyland has four categories of rides: Those inspired by movies (Peter Pan, Indiana Jones, Sleeping Beauty, Dumbo, etc.). Those that were made into Disney movies inspired by Disneyland rides (Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribean, Country Bears, etc.). Those that should NEVER be made into movies (Small World). And those that have POTENTIAL! Could the Enchanted Tiki Room ever fit into the latter category? Or is my rum inspired daydream just that?

Given that the ride itself was based loosely on "The African Queen." well, it would seem a silly idea. An Enchanted Tiki Room movie has "Eddie Murphy" written all over it. See: Haunted Mansion. When we've lost the ability to appreciate something optimistic, positive, colorful, and sentimental for the innocence of childhood, then it seems like we've also lost the ability to enjoy a great deal of Walt Disney's original goals for The Happiest Place on Earth. By forcing a lens of modern cynicism onto one's view of everything, I guess it's possible to miss the fantastic abstract and stylized artforms in Mary Blair's design of the Small World ride. And it's also possible to have a negative reaction to the simple, positive message. But I guess that's one of the realities of modern culture (sadly) that Disney has tried to cater to at different times over the years, spelling the demise of some great original rides and shows, and also resulting in kind of a weird split personality in the parks at times. But I would think the ETR falls into the same category as Small World in that sense, so it's a little surprising to see such a contrast in opinion about the two in the same thread. Beware, these are the same forces that drove the awful redesign of the ETR in the Orlando Disneyworld! I sure hope we don't someday get the "new and improved" Small World with a hip hop soundtrack and "up-to-date" characters. THAT would be a horror movie! -Randy

So let me get this straight: in your view, if I don't care for It's Small World, that automatically makes me a postmodern cynic who reviles everything pure and innocent? Don't you think that's a bit presumptuous and judgemental? I enjoy Disneyland immensely and have for my entire life. But that doesn't mean that I'm required to love and worship every single part of it like it's a holy temple, and I don't need a theme-park ride full of singing dolls to teach me about optimism and sentimentality. I have 2 kids who've shown me more about that than Small World ever could.

It's not bad, and has a lot of atmosphere, and stars James MacArthur, who played the oldest brother Fritz in Disney's film "Swiss Family Robinson" (1960).

In fact remakes seem to be the thing these days - maybe it's time for yet another new Peter Pan. The Pirates and Haunted Mansion movies seemed to take vignettes from the rides, but not major characters. A movie based on ETR would have a great setting and specific named characters, but not much built-in story. That probably wouldn't dissuade any brass considering a movie, but the less marquee status of ETR compared to other rides might be a minus. There might be a concern that today's audiences wouldn't be interested in a movie based on a sit-down attraction where puppets sing repetitive happy songs. -Randy

I thought it was great! It was during the holidays so the CHristmas decorations were added to it, too. ZAZZ!

He was a short Hispanic man carrying Mickey's head and wearing the lower part of the costume. (Sorry believers, Mickey is really a human) I fell from the fence and hid under a very large dumpster. It was stinky under there. Let's make a movie about that and all the people who've made it in without paying. What about all the people who have died there and all the different lawsuits? (Gays being hustled out for dancing together). Oh and my other friend and I would lite cigs and poke a hole just under the cherry and stick a fire cracker fuse in and walk away. MInutes later....POP. We did this all over the park. We watched all nite as security was looking for us, teeheehee. Then we got busted. Let's make a movie about all that. Or is that just not right.

Seems like Small World is one of the few that is what it was originally intended to be like. They recently gave the one here in FL a spruce up and it looks grand. Bring on the Blair, I say! (we also are lucky to have the very large Mary Blair ceramic mural in the Contemporary Hotel) I think a Tiki Room movie would be great.. but for the love of Walt, please don't "Eddie Murphy" that thing- let Pixar handle it.
