I have been talking with a few peeps in SO Cal about coming out for a carving seminar with Sherry. Are there any carvers there who would be willing to pay for such a time wasting few days similar to the Coon Tiki Thing. Of Course that was not a time waster at all actually. I would love to be able to come out and meet everyone and share what little carving knowledge I have left that I haven't already given away!
Let me know if it is something we can do? Ideas? Suggestions?

Suggestions?

How about lots of bandaids.

GROG think it is an AWESOME idea, Benz.

You da man!

Sounds interesting Ben...Would it be on a weekend?

Also I'd be quite curious about the curriculum. i.e. focus on large or small pieces. Hand or Power equipment. Methodology for making ideas into 2-D, then 3-D pieces? When to decide it's done (before your wife has divorce papers served)

Were you thinking of a lecture, or a full-on work session where people would leave not just with filled notebooks, but with finished objects?

Where in Southern Cal were you thinking?

Do we need to know how to carve already or do you teach basics for beginners????

If Ben plans on being here you can bet I will be there! Count me in!

If it's open to beginners, we would love to attend.

In fact, I'll be happy to volunteer my house for the event.

You know I'd do my best to be there!!! Looking forward to seeing Benzart over here!!!

In. If it's L.A. or below, I'm there. Do we bring tools? What's the bill?

Who gets the wood? Grog?

Grog always get wood.

I would definitely be interested. Of course the wheres and whens would be the ultimate deciding factors for me.

Thank God for Viagra. Oops! ( Maybe TMI)

If there is no specific venue, I could look into using one of the yards that a tree service that I deal with has in north Vista...

T

I'm a beginner with no tools to speak of....but I'd love to attend.

Is this supposed to be like coontiki where folks are preparing to hunker down and really make progress on their own piece?

or is it more of a party, hang out, Im just here to watch sort of thing.

How many hours should folks expect to dedicate to really come away with a significant knowledge base?

Ben,

How many extra sets of chisels and mallets are available for folks who dont own any?

How can we make it cost effective for you?

B

Thanks for the response, we're just in the planning/wishing stage right now but from the response, it looks like it may work. It will probably be 2 full days of carving like Coon Tiki was and may be toward the end of October.

Doh! I'm gonna be in Hawaii from Oct 26 to Nov 6. I'll keep my fingers crossed that the seminar won't be during that time (hint hint)....
BTW, I'm totally interested.

If the two Bens are together in one place, won't that cause the universe to collapse in on itself or something like that?

No, the universe would expand not collapse, according to Tarzan's Theory of Tiki Relativity.

Hey all,
Here are the official West Coast Carving Seminar details.

Dates: October 28th & 29th, 2006.
Location: San Diego. Exact location given upon enrollment
Instructors: Benzart, Tiki Diablo & Bosko.
Cost $125.00 per person

What you'll get: Two days of instruction, lunch, snacks, beverages & a commemorative t-shirt. You will also be provided a two foot log for your carving pleasure, but you will need to bring your own chisels (BYOC) and a carving stand if you have one.

The event will be limited to 25 carvers. First come, first served. Payment will be required in advance. No reservations will be held without payment. You can pay by check, money order or PayPal. If paying by PayPal, a $4 fee will be added to offset PayPal fees. We'll send you an invoice. If you'd like to mail in your payment, please PM me for mailing address.

San Diego has many lodging options available depending upon your budget. We'd be happy to suggest a few. (Lodging & travel are not included)

We are really looking forward to putting this event together. This may be your one chance to learn from the pro's and have all three together at once.

If you have any further questions, please post here or drop us a PM.
Hope to see you all there.

...but you will need to bring your own chisels (BYOC)... is it BYOBA (bring your own band-aids) also?

?????

What is not working with this seminar? Anyone have any ideas to make it work?

H

Ben I would love to go but it is too far for me. Somewhere in between San Fernando and San Diego would be closer.

Like my realtor likes to emphasize," Location, location location".

I love San Diego, but it's a bit of a drive and the 405 and 5 going South on a Friday SUCKS!!!!! GROG live just above Los Angeles, and I'm sure there are a number of people in the LA area and up to San Francisco who would like to go, but San Diego is just North of Mexico.Gas is around $3.20 a gallon out here.GROG propose it be located nearer LA so that it's more centrally located between San Diego and San Francisco, so that more people will have the opportunity to make it.

Just GROG's two cents.

D

I know not everyone here has kids, so it's a non issue for them. But for those of us that do the dates could be a problem. Since Halloween falls on a weekday (Teusday) this year, most people celebrate (attend or throw parties) the weekend before Halloween. Just bringing up a point that might be an issue for some. I've already told my little one Halloween is getting kicked to the curb this year...sorry Sonny but Momma's get'n her some carvin learnin by Benzart!

Grog Right! San Deigo is quite a poke for me also. Also, October marks the start of my families birthday season with holiday season falling in line right after. So that added to the cost of gas, lodgings, etc make for a spendy trip at a time of the year when my fun coupons are usually runnin' low. It sounds like a great gig and I would love to be a part of it. But at this point to many factors are holdin' me back.
Good luck!!!

I'm in... and I'll try to bring enough band-aids for everyone. Well, at least for the people like me who, you know, can't go a day without getting at least one small cut somewhere.

I'm in, but i do agree with grog that san diego is tough to get to for some of us, and it is halloween weekend. i'm sure there is a good reason for san diego (like transporting 25 logs :D), but you'd probably get more responses from a los angeles venue. i know it would save me a couple hundred greenbacks....

so who do we pay and are there any recommendations for specific tools?

thanx,
aaron

Sweet!!! I wanna go. San Diego is perfect in the fall and I'm getting chisels for my birthday! (or maybe a Little Feet box set... but the chisels would definitely be better for the seminar. Yep.)Check's in the mail Moki!

The train ride to San Diego isn't bad, plus you can drink while somebody else drives. I'm sure Nicktiki would probably be willing to lend out a room in exchange for diaper changing services. :D

Hey, we need a name for this event. Coontiki was a good one and I like Left Coast Tiki Carving Seminar. Any creative ideas out there?

C
Cammo posted on Fri, Aug 11, 2006 9:53 PM

I say we call it the Left Coast Chop Chop Seminar.

A Tiki Chop Chop is any event where people get together and carve wood, either together on one piece, or on their own works. It's a group Chop Chop where lots of chips fly. I'm using the term from now on anyway.

And I like it because it sounds like something GROG would say.

N

If GROG like to change diapers, GROG can stay at my house. We'll give GROG food and drink, too.
