Not tiki per se, but of interest to people here I think: On Wednesday, May 21st at 7:00PM, Forbidden Island is pleased to welcome St. George Spirits Distiller Lance Winters as he discusses the history & craft of Absinthe. Lance is the mind behind the first legally produced Absinthe in the United States since 1912, made right here in Alameda. Lance will discuss the complex array of herbs & botanicals that go into making this unique and legendary spirit. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to meet the distiller and taste this very special spirit. Admission is just $9 and includes absinthe tasting. Read more about Lance & Absinthe here: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/05/dining/05absi.html?_r=1&oref=slogin http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absinthe Mahalo! |

I have been drawn to the history and mystery of absinthe. One of my bars will just next week begin to offer the Absinthe Drip. (We're using Lucid Absinthe.) I picked up a gorgeous crystal dripper. Sitting on the back bar with halogen lights making it sparkle,I expect it will catch every eye. Note that the 1934 Zombie recipe (Sippin' Safari), calls for 6 drops of absinthe. (I've found that three drops is enough.) Everyone with a genuine interest in spirits should check it out. Go to Forbidden Island, if you live in the area, and immerse yourself! |

Just like beer or wine produce a different-feeling kind of drunkeness, good absinthe can produce a quite unique, lucid form of intoxication that is very conversation inspiring, or simply encourages quiet philosophical musings. --Off course you go stark raving mad after that, but that's a small price to pay! :D Wish I could join you, folks, guess I will just have to nurse my 12 year-old Cockspur that I got at the Cologne Rum Kontor... By the way, I am glad to see that this seminal book on Absinthe was reprinted and is available again: http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0811816508/ref=sib_dp_pt#reader-link This book is a sort of the BOT of Absinthe. It inspired its worldwide re-appreciation, and with its wonderful illustrations of vintage liquor ephemera and well researched histories of the artistic avantgarde's love affair with the stuff (see the Contents page in the link above), it's simply a must for any art book lover. |
