Found some freeze dried Rambutan (a fruit grown in Hawaii and other tropical locales) at Trader Joe's the other day. My wife said it tasted like strawberries wrapped in a dirty dish rag, but I thought it was much better than that :P Because of the freeze dried texture (like dried foam) I'm not sure how you could use it in a food or drink recipe - any suggestions? |

Rambutan are from the lychee family, and fresh have that same milky-white gelatinous flesh and a single large pit. They have a more subtle, delicate taste than lychee, but are quite good. Since they are similar to lychee, look for lychee recipes and sub in the rambutan. You said yours are freeze-dried, can you rehydrate them or do they just turn into a paste? Maybe drop a couple into vodka, add some Soho lychee liqueur, and think about a tropical island. |
