Description:
This is the Dinkler Luau in Atlanta. Was across from Piedmont Hospital. That probably doomed it. Built by southern hotel magnate Carling Dinkler before he put "Surf Rider" Lounges in his hotels. The Luau was a huge hit and the talk of the town. I think it opened in 1959, but may have been 56. Within a couple of years, it was sold to the Dobb's family for a huge profit, and they went on to open many Dobb's House Luaus.

Here are two menus from the Luau Restaurant in Atlanta. One is a Dinner menu and the other is a Tropical Drinks menu. The Tropical Drinks menu is copyrighted 1957. The photos show the front, back, and inside of each menu.

Ukutiki,

That is one of my favorite menu covers. I laminated a copy of the one I have and stuck it on my motorhome freezer door!

Here is a postcard showing the interior of the The Luau in Atlanta.

Is your menu the Dinner or Tropical Drinks menu?

Saw this old matchbook from the original Dinkler Luau on ebay (did not win it).

They had a Tonga Room for parties!

Is that the "Fog Cutter" there? Can't read it.

Well, as it turns out, that is a unique mug for The Luau:

Do those Atlanta Luau mugs have an ooga-mooga entry yet? I'm totally wishlisting them when they do. Where'd you find 'em?

Indeed there is! I got 2, so, one is going on Ebay soon.

Swanky,

Great score, you must have been stoked to find two.

Also discussed in my SOUND OF TIKI booklet as a the perfect example of the evolution from Pre-Tiki to Tiki, accompanying the "LUAU" jingle on the CD:

Missed adding the oddest ad:

Spotted this ashtray with the more modern Luau font.
