Beach Bum Scott's Carvings

If dremeling on thin plywood counts...I have never really done any type of wood carving before I started on my bar.
I need to do something for my window well and figured why not carved/stained panels, inspired by mugs and from some Tapa patterns I found online (and Bamboo Ben's work).

Next up a mask for the front of the bar, Hope I can figure out how to use a chisel!!!

I've never tried any router work, so I can't offer any advice. It looks great for your first (but hopefully not last) foray into tiki carving.

Nice stuff there BBScott, for your first tikis, Excellent designs. As you get more pieces under your belt your carvings will improve so much you will want to quit work and carve tikis for a living! Be prepared. :o

My first time using chisels, still need to do some work and put on a finish.

Your Kon Tiki image looks spot-on.

I used red chalklike dust to color him, I didn't want to use paint.

It's been a while...
I've been messing around with clay modeling and resin casting...now I want to do some small scale wood stuff so
today I picked up one of the Flexcut carver starter kits and a few other tools then went to work on my first small wood piece.

I didn't break out the PBR till it was time to sand...
This sure is a lot harder than modeling clay.

Here I made a turtle from clay, poured a mold then cast it in resin.

When I cast the turtle I planned on carving someing on it but didn't know what, after looking at it for a while I realized the shell is perfect for a Kon Tiki.

After getting out the dremel and going to work, then pouring a new mold.

This is a panel piece I did last summer that I never posted.

I am a big fan of anything Kon-Tiki as well. I would never have thought of turning the image into a turtle shell. Very clever.

I figured I would play around with my new tools today..
Let me tell ya if you are learning to carve small scale stuff with 1 mill v's & u's Padauk is NOT the wood to start with!!!

It's very pretty

But boy is it hard and it has long open pores that cause the wood to rip!

you have some nice work here, especially in all of the different mediums

I would suggest using basswood to start small stuff. It may not be as "glamorous" as exotic woods, but it will get you used to the knives.
