My husband, Bruce, and I went on what we call a 'tiki safari' for my 50th birthday. We first stopped at Minnie's Restaurant in Modesto. The staff was friendly and the paintings are fabulous! Not to mention the wonderful tiki sculptures by Victor Phillips of Tiki Jungle. We also picked up a tiki mug. We then headed down the street to a bar called Tiki Cocktails. After that we drove straight to LA to watch a drive-in movie at the Tiki Drive-In. The following day we stopped at R.E.K. Enterprises to view their life-sized statues. I hope to purchase one of their pirates. We then went to a few stores to purchase bamboo and other items for our backyard and tiki bar. Unfortunately, Bamboo Ben's shop is closed, but his wife was kind enough to let me know that he is still going strong on the road doing custom work. We ended the evening with cocktails and a fabulous dinner at Don The Beachcomber's. The band sang to me, plus treat of all treats, Art Snyder (the owner) sat and chatted with us for quite a while. This restaurant was fantastic! I cannot speak highly enough about the ambiance, the cocktails, the food, and the staff. Five stars! It should be a national landmark. And, we added two more mugs to our collection. The following day we went to Disneyland. My special 'Happy Birthday' pin presented us with first class treatment all day long. The Disney staff and other patrons of the park showered me with aloha. And, I received high praise for my paddling skills during the canoe ride (I belong to Kilohana OCC). For our final day, we had brunch with my Godmother (a.k.a. Mrs. Doubtfire) and then we stopped for pie, coffee, and a tour of The Madonna Inn. Awesome weekend! Turning 50 was fun! Aloha to all of my Tiki Central brothers and sisters, |
