Among Exotica aficionados, Russ Garcia is probably most known for his records, "Fantastica,""Sounds of the Night," Carioca," "Swingin' On the Moon (by Mel Torme)," and his soundtracks to "The Time Machine" and "Atlantis, the Lost Continent." Tuesday, March 20 is the Vernal Equinox for planet Earth, a long-standing excuse for throwing Pagan rituals, orienting pyramids, and the like. Exotica is the official music of the Vernal Equinox (at least to us) so won't you join us tonight as we set the backdrop for your Rite of Spring! Magic elixirs in the guise of Tiki drinks will aid you to achieve the sought after ritual trance mood! We would also like to extend a belated happy birthday to Sandy Warner, enticing cover girl for many of the classic Exotica LPs, including the holy grail, "Exotica," by Martin Denny. Sandy Warner has the same birthday as Les Baxter (although quite a few years younger)- March 14. She was 22 when she modeled for the iconic record cover, and eventually became known as "The Exotica Girl." She graced a total of 16 covers for Martin Denny alone! Aloha and Hola! What a weekend at the Hukilau in Fort Lauderdale! Highlights included fantastic live music, amazing cocktails served by our colleagues at PKNY and Lani Kai, and instructive seminars. We especially enjoyed the PKNY and Sailor Jerry presentation of the History of Spiced Rum. Thanks guys! We're back in NYC, refreshed and ready to serve up our signature blend of old, new, popular and obscure Exotica at PKNY tonight. Although nothing can truly compare to spending four days at the world's most intimate tiki festival with friends old and new (not to mention the glorious Mai Kai), we promise to share that aloha spirit with you. So if you weren't able to make it to the Hukilau, belly up to the bar tonight and ask for one of the special Hukilau drinks served by PKNY. We recommend the spiced piña colada... We would also like to wish a belated happy birthday to Tito Puente, who dipped into the Exotica genre with his LP, "Tambo!" among other recordings. Mr. Puente was born April 20, 1923. He died in 2000. In exchange for our offerings of special Tiki drink and some Exotica requests, the Tikis have agreed to provide NYC with more tropical weather - in keeping with tonight's celebration of May Day - down at the tiki Bar (PKNY, of course!) Look for the rain to part, the sun to come out, and a rise in temperature of about 20 degrees starting around Happy Hour. This will continue to the end of our set at 11:00 pm. First off: Mahalo to Pablus, Brooklyn Babydoll, the staff at PKNY, and everyone who made last week’s OHANA Send-off a huge success! Primativa in Hi-Fi had the honor of presenting live music for the very first time at PKNY. No one could have been a better choice as our premiere act than tiki music master Pablus Digitalus of the Crazed Mugs. Pablus’s uniquely Tiki songs and stories set the evening’s mood exotic, and the ebullient dance moves of Brooklyn Babydoll completed the exotic setting with island spirit. Again, thank you both! After four glorious days at OHANA: Luau at the Lake, we’re already craving more tiki music, tiki cocktails and tiki people. Not that we usually need a reason to gather with ‘ohana, but… June 30 is National Mai Tai Day!!! As you know, we always like to get a jump on things, so set your sights on the happiest hour we know and join us at PKNY from 6-11pm for Mai Tais and the best Aloha Spirit on the isle of Manhattan. After a week of booze, booze, and still more booze in New Orleans, some of you may be hard-pressed to come up with a reason to join us at PKNY TONIGHT, but here it is: The Hula dancing sisters are back!
Join us tonight, Tuesday July 31, for an evening of exotic tiki pleasure. We’ll be turning up the heat with seductive Oriental melodies, rhythmic jungle drums,and a tasty blend of old, new, popular and obscure Exotica. Tuesday, August 21 Aloha, NYC! Gina and I will be touching down via personal rockets in the Lower East Side in time for our day job at PKNY, i.e. playing the Exotic Sounds of Primativa in Hi-Fi for Tiki tipplers every Tuesday evening! Now that our mission in San Diego at Tiki Oasis 12 has been successfully completed, we are at liberty to reveal all. Gina of the Jungle and I gathered with our fellow Agents of T.I.K.I. and thoroughly overwhelmed the agents of S.O.B.E.R. There was nary a hint of sobriety left in our wake. Trust me! ; -) There was quite a significant East Coast agent presence with Richard Boccato and the PKNY crew out there on the front line lobbing Vespers and Jamaican Divorces at the (former) S.O.B.E.R. agents as they were distracted by the (incognito) Go-Go dancing of Brooklyn Baby Doll! Agents Gaylord Fields and Kathleen and Xerox added to the sonic persuasion while Tiki Kiki and Greg unleashed their Singapore Sling-shots on our adversaries. Thank you Otto and Baby Doe for the grooviest Tiki Oasis of all! Cheers,
