Downey Has a Tiki Float in the 2112 Rose Parade I have pics

Pages: 1 2 67 replies

I recently moved to Downey a few months ago. The other day I went to city hall to get dog tags for my pugs. And to my surprise I saw this postcard at the cashiers window. I asked her why they had this sweet pic. She began to tell me that they are selling these postcards of the conceptual painting to raise money for the float for this years Rose Parade .75 cents each, they also have a collectors pin for $6. Anyway I was stoked because the concept looks pretty old school to me. Anyway, she also gave me the phone number if I wanted to decorate it. I think I just might.....Check out my pics.

I have visited Tahitian Villge a few times in the 80's. Once in the bar to watch a Mike Tyson fight, I saw a few bands in the upstairs banquit area, and even scored some drugs there in early 90's. It was all tore up, but it was still a very cool looking place for the shadey place it was. I wish I was there in its heyday.

This float is one of the few done completely by volunteers, looks like a good project for the local Ohana. And you can buy a $10 raffle ticket for a chance to ride the float in the Rose Parade.

Amazing....Looks like I will have to make a post parade trip up to see the floats

Wow, I didn't think Downey was still liveable. I dug out for greener pastures in '75, but it was certainly loveable back in the day.
S/E LA was once the best. Good luck!

Awesome stuff Spermy/s.!!

Thanks for the information SW. I went by the City Hall this morning and picked up some cards and a pin. By the way, they also sell the cards for three for $2.00. I hope to donate some time on this float.

If anybody is interested in valunteering to help decorate the float, you can click on this link!!!

That looks like an ambitious float. Any way for us to contribute from afar and possibly get the pin and card?

I believe you can click the link and inquire on the Contact Us section of the web page.

Won't we all be dead? Per the thread title, it's not for 101 years from now.

We will more than likely be alive again by 2112. Sign up now!! Tee Hee I must have been in "RUSH" when I posted this.

Spermy, I wanna see you on the Float in a Grass skirt, and coconuts for a bra and doing the Prom queen wave. {where you move yer hand back and forth like a fish moving a fin.}
hee hee hee

That float looks great! I may actually have to go see it in person.

My brother David, his Wife Cece and I spent a few hours helping out today. We are returning tomorrow afternoon then taking off for an evening cocktail at the Tiki Ti.

Framing the float. There is a bar on it. They framed the base with steel rods, formed some thin foam/and or fabric, covered that with a fine firm mesh then sprayed some foam insulation to make the rocks. They had specialists doing that work.

David, his wife and I were assigned a tedious task of covering Tiki Masks with organic coverings. (Coffee grinds, chile powder, pumpkin seeds, cinnamon sticks). First apply white glue with a paint brush to a small area.

Then apply the material to the masks. Then we used a dry brush to wipe away the excess.

What is the parade route? Will it be nationally televised?

Looks very promising.
Mahalo to Downey for spreading the Tiki love.

The Rose Bowl parade is ALWAYS nationally broadcast. It is an INSTITUTION, much like the Detroit Thanksgiving Parade, Macy's Christmas Parade, New Year's Eve in Times Square, the World Series or the Super Bowl. Even people not into football will watch the parade. Not sure of the parade route but if you are going in person, take seating w/ you & arrive HOURS before the parade starts. Just find a spot next to thousands of other folks sitting on lawn/camp chairs & you will undoubtedly have found a section of the parade route. It will assuredly be signed/barricaded as well.

M

Oh, THAT parade..., I thot it was pretty elaborate for S/E LA, even if it went down Imperial Hwy. and right past ZODY'S.

Looks like a great float...the only thing that could make
it better would be those Downey boys The Blasters.

Whoa, I had no idea those guys came from my old stomping grounds! I knew some of Mettalica had, but it was always fertile ground for great musicians.

T

BTW, I ASSUME this will be for the 2012 parade, NOT the 2112 parade.

Float update:
Tiki drum player taking shape.

Trying to do our part with the Tiki masks.

One mask down, three to go.

I live near Downey and was planning on cruising over to assist but I've been sick as a dog all week.. Will they still be working on the float Friday?.. I'd love to see it in person and still volunteer.. Hopefully the 5 days of swigging NyQuil will have me cured by tomorrow..

hey cvc-come on down! the location is tuff to find-but worth the effort. it' on gardendale street right next to st. mathias high school. this use to be pius x high years ago. the float is in a large ramshackle building behind the first chain link gate north of and on the same side of the street as the school. it is between paramount bl. and garfield in downey. the exterior of the property provides absolutely no clue to the buzz of activity within. say hello to me and tikvato if you decide to come. bring a little cash as they have some cool stuff for sale (tee's, sweatshirts, pins, etc. 10 am to 10 pm. they provide a light lunch and there are plenty of grinds locally. no need to arrange working hours or skills-everyone is welcome,1 hour or twelve,

Very nice job there, TikiVato.

T

Here's today's progress report. Took my grandson for a few hours.
First Tiki is the drummer with moving arms getting painted. after the painting they will glue seeds, spices and other organic coverings.

The second tiki will be stationary.

My grandson, sister-in-law Cece are doing some tedious work, painting and then gluing cracked green peas to steel rods. Everything on the float has to be covered with vegetation. My bother David is trying to look busy.

OMG...you guys are doing a fabulous job. The masks are going to be awesome and the major Tiki is delightful. Keep up the good work!!!

T

My Sister-in-law worked for hours yesterday, applying each pedal one at a time. Nice work Cece. I couldn't get to Downey today. I hope they have it completed today.

T

I couldn't resist and made it to Downey. Here's a few shots of the finished product. Robert Kelley was in charge and he, his crew and all of the volunteers did a great job.

I can hardly wait to see it on the Tournament of Roses Parade (aka Rose Parade)tomorrow.

Very nice job!

T

Congrats to the City of Downey and all of their volunteer float decorators on winning the "Founder's Trophy" with their efforts. The float ia AMAZING! I just wish they'd shown a/the tiki on HGTV. :(

T

Winner of the 2012 Founders' Trophy, Awarded to the most beautiful entry built and decorated
by volunteers from the sponsoring community or organization

Congrats to all who participated, looks like a beautiful float and lots of work. Hope someone posts some YouTube footage

That's great, guys, Congrats! I hope someone is gonna post a U-Tube clip of it here.

I am so glad Charles Phoenix got to realize his dream of being IN the Rose Parade by being on that float. I met Charles Friday night and he told me he was helping with the build, and the BOT was lying around for reference.

I just saw it drift by on channel 5 and the float showed up beautifully. It's especially great that Downey designs/builds their floats with the community. Excellent job by all those involved.

I do think KTLA could have spent a few more seconds on Charles and around the many elements of the float and a few less seconds on the top of the volcano, but they did feature the tikis prominently. :)

Kevin

I hope that there is a YouTube of the float too. You all did such a wonderful job. Cece, that cockatoo is delightful. Thanks for sending me pix Dave.

T

This year here on the East Coast we got smart & watched the whole parade online @ KLTV.
Waited for the Tiki float & it was GREAT. Watching the parade with NO commercials & NO
network goofballs was terrific (:

K

Darn it all! I DVR'd the parade on NBC just to see that float and they gave it no coverage. It drifted by behind the anchors talking their way to a commercial break and then they never showed it again. Not finding anything on Youtube yet. Please post a link if anyone finds one.

C

Same thing on ABC. Not tiki float coverage. While the surfing dogs were awesome, I really wanted to see the tiki float!!

AF

Congratulations to the City of Downey and to all of those that put time into building it's float, they won the Founder's Trophy!!
Very glad to be there and see it in person, here's some photos...bummer I was in the shade because the color would have really jumped out more, but what a great 80 degree day in Pasadena!

Nice vortex effect fire ring in the second photo
