Mark your calendars with a big red circle, tapa stamp, coconut sticker or whatever you have to do, but save the date! The 5th Annual Texas Tiki Round-up at the Enchanted Lagoon is confirmed for Saturday, Sept. 22nd! This year we will be rocked by the awesome Del-Vipers, a band I had the pleasure to see perform at Antone's recently. And local exotica band John Frum Cargo Cult!

I'm looking forward to attending my first Texas Tiki Round-up. Talk to you soon.

C

Is there a website up and running for this event yet? Thanks in advance!

Clintiki

K

Hi Clintiki!

We will probably not have a website, but will keep everyone informed on this thread and via Texas Tiki Email. PM me if you'd like to be added to the mailing list.

More excitement being planned as we speak. Further announcements are coming soon, as well as how to RSVP and other info.

Cheers!

Clintiki, the Texas Tiki Round-ups are not huge multi-day events, like Oasis or Hukilau. But they're a blast and the best Texas tiki event going! Koitiki and her husband, with the help of friends, host this great one-evening party in their beautiful home (great tiki room!) and large back area (dubbed The Enchanted Lagoon, complete with saltwater pool, koi pond, wooded trails, hidden tikis, etc.). It's pretty elaborate for a "yard party", what with live music, vendors, art displays, and more, but the atmosphere is very relaxed and intimate, and it's easy to meet new people. Attractions are added and more attend every year, but physical limitations would kick in, long before it reached a Hukilau sized crowd!
Here are links to the previous event's threads. For those new to this event, look in the later pages, for pictures people posted, after each party.

K

Thanks Limbo Lizard! You're hired as my new PR person!

There will definitely be a new attraction this year. And new entertainment, new vendors added, new culinary delights offered...

Sounds fantastic, Koitiki!
In fact, the only important thing missing this year has, alas, been missing all the other years, too...
Why not GROG come to Texas? :(
GROG could go see dinosaur tracks at Glen Rose, while in Texas... very nostalgic.

Can't wait! Sounds like a blast =)

GROG coming to Texas, but not until November for High School reunion.

GROG went to school in Texas? Was that back when it was still a republic?

(Texans, please note that is a jab at my friend GROG, not at Texas. I know some of you are still sensitive about that annexation of Texas thing :) )

K

What? Grog! No Texas until November? Grog not get to try out his idea on the mini golf course? We will get you here one of these years!

MadDog Mike- you are welcome too!

Yay everyone who's said they are coming! I can't wait!

Wow...congratulations to all ya'll for making it to your fifth annual event. Looking forward to the pictures.

"MadDog Mike- you are welcome too!"

Texan hospitality and Tiki - what a great combination! Unfortunately, it's a bit of a drive for me :(

------Nope, it was back when Texas was called Pangea. GROG went to Pangea High, home of the Fighting Mastodons. Then GROG went to Mammoth University. We were the Long Tusks and our rivals were stupid Neanderthals who were into agriculture. They were called "Agates".

Party update:

When was the last time you heard an exotica band in Austin? Like never, right? Well you will if you come to the Tiki Round-up in September! Joining the entertainment lineup for that evening is John Frum Cargo Cult. They will be playing a few exotica standards and a few original tunes inspired by Martin Denny among others. Interested in the band's name? Check out these wiki links:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Frum
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cargo_cult

For those who have not attended before, this annual tiki extravaganza happens at my house in Austin aka The Enchanted Lagoon. Tikiphiles and the tiki curious gather from all over Texas and points beyond to celebrate all that is retro polynesian pop. An open outdoor A-frame bar serves authentic classic tropical cocktails to guests who are free to wander the grounds and lounge in the tiki room inside. This year we have tiki favorite DJ Tropicana Joe spinning tunes of the islands, an exotica band that will enchant you(John Frum Cargo Cult, mentioned above), and a kick ass surf band that will make you dance(The Del-Vipers). Folks dress in their vintage Hawaiian wear or casual tropical attire, but bring their bathing suits if they fancy a dip in the pool. We always have a drawing for cool tiki prizes. Amazing local artists display their work, many pieces of which are for sale. (More info coming soon on who will be here this year- and it's exciting!) And there is food. Like pulled pork sliders, spring rolls, coconut chicken skewers, Kahlua frosted cookies, etc. All food, drink, entertainment and raffle prizes are free. We only ask that folks help us cover our costs with a small donation.

And now for something completely different...

We got Dole Whip!! That's right, the delicious, delectable and delicate pineapple soft serve delicacy that is served outside of the Enchanted Tiki Room at Disneyland. Rum float anyone?

AND as we speak a section of the backyard is being transformed into "Huna Li'ili'i Kolepa", which translates to "Hidden Little Golf." Hope you will give it a swing (if you can find it)!

We're looking for a few volunteers to help out. Please let me know if you're willing to lend a hand. It would only be an hour or so shift, not all night!

Everyone who will have items for sale, please confirm with me, even if you think I know. I'd like to get a few more details to include in my next email.

As usual, we encourage anyone who can to bring a food or drink item to share. That would be awesome, but is not required. To help defray our costs we are asking for a donation of $15/person. Thank you in advance for this. We cover the expenses for this party out of our pocket and don't make a profit. Paypal is set up if you don't want to think about it that night. Just log into your Paypal account, select Send Money and enter this email: [email protected]. This isn't my regular email so direct questions to [email protected].

And please, please RSVP - here on Tiki Central or to [email protected] so that we can purchase food and drink appropriately.

Please note this is essentially an adult party. We have a large yard that is dark with multiple water features that are not fenced in any way. There is no lifeguard and our house is not childproofed. We have quite a bit of booze flowing and the music will get loud. That being said, if you cannot find a sitter for the keikis, we will not turn you away!

Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Koitiki

I am looking forward to it. I've got it in my calendar.

K

Can't wait to see you and Michelle, Benehune!

YAY! BEN!!!!

Want very badly to attend this but alas I am required to request annual leave no later than 90 days out.

K

Jay, would you please resend your email address? I accidentally hit delete instead of reply to your PM. Oops!

K

Check out the awesome artwork and wares that will be available at the party!

Central Texan and Tiki Centralite Amate will be bringing his amazing carved tikis. I know more than a few of us locals are the proud owners of one or more of Amate's pieces. You can see his work here:

This guy has already found a home. :)

Crash says she's working on a line of t-shirts and hopes to have some ready.

Blue Rooster Customs will be here with some fun new stuff.

Brooke and Cedar bring custom hula hoops and custom shirts

And for a super lucky few - Crash and Amate have generously donated items for the prize drawing. Too bad the host gets excluded from the drawing! Haha.

K

Anyone hungry? Cabo Bob's fish tacos just added to the menu!
Yum...

These things are getting raves. Don't show up too late to try one and see what the fuss is all about!

Here's an update on the carvings I will bring to the party. These two have been spoken for and are no longer available. There's still a good selection left. http://www.tikicentral.com/viewtopic.php?topic=43484&forum=21&10

K

And those carvings look good Amate!

Just got back from Tiki Oasis and I brought goodies for the raffle! Mahalos to Lee Joseph/Dionysus Records, Buzzy, the Shag store, Tiki Tony and Doug Horne for their generosity. These guys rock!

Hope this helps. Can't wait to see y'all Heelgrinder!

I

Looking forward to kicking it with some tiki-heads!

Ian

K

Glad you can make it Ian!

Sorry if I missed this, but what time do things kick off?

K

Aloha!

The party starts at 7pm!

Party prep is going swimmingly! Last night I organized the raffle prizes. I've streamlined it this year. We will still draw names, but only for the handmade art pieces generously donated by Crash and Amate. The other prizes will be available at the raffle table between 10 and 11 pm. Volunteers will be there to help you draw a ticket, some of which will correspond to a prize or goodie bag.

The hoarding of pineapple juice and rum has begun! We are selecting cocktails to prepare like we have in the past. Water and sodas and a little beer will also be available. If you want a lot of beer, bring some. Cans only.

Don't arrive too late to hear Austin faves Kathy Murray featuring Monster Bill Jones regale us with a few songs on their ukes! They are about to release their first solo record. Go Kathy and Bill!

Another music note: If you are a surf music fan, you might want to check out a new Facebook group started by Cedar and Brooke called Austin Surfs.

Because fire danger is high in the area and some of our grass is dead and dry, I'm asking folks to please please not smoke on the grass. I'm also advising the ladies to wear shoes that will be easy to navigate the yard's unlevel terrain in. No spike heels will be allowed on the golf greens.

I'm still looking for a few more volunteers for easy tasks. Please let me know! Also don't forget to RSVP!

Mahalo!
Koitiki

K

Aloha Texas tikiphiles!

The time to tiki is almost upon us. We should have a great group. I've gotten over 100 RSVP's so far. As always, this is not a public party, but guests are welcome to invite 1 or 2 friends who you trust and know will be respectful that this is our home. I wish we had the facilities for a humongous crowd, but that might require renting another locale and that just wouldn't be near as much fun! Please make sure that you or your friends RSVP to [email protected] no later than tomorrow AM(Tues. the 18th) so I can have enough food and drink on hand.

Speaking of food, in addition to our planned menu Greg Gee of the website Doc's Atomic Diner will be joining us and has offered to cook up some Char Sui Pork and Spam Rumaki. Did you know Spam is huge in Hawaii? I dig his "Calamaori" symbol here: http://www.docs-atomic-diner.com. I'm also looking forward to HulaCat's famous summer rolls and Martini Tiki's Polynesian Spareribs. Yum. I very much appreciate all contributions of food or a pitcher of cocktails.

We are creating several different cocktails in large quantities. These drinks are strong and meant to be poured as small sipping cocktails. Make sure to pace yourself and mix in some food and water between drinks so you are up and enjoying the whole party.

Party is this Saturday, Sept. 22nd, starts at 7pm and usu. goes til early morn, but we try to be as respectful of my neighbors as possible. I will post the address Friday.

Suggested donation at the door: $15 or Paypal before the 22nd by selecting Send Money and entering this email: [email protected].

Please email me at [email protected] if you have any questions. Mahalo!
Julie

Koitiki,

Looking forward to the Texas Tiki Party Extravaganza....
got our ukes stringed up and ready for strummin'.
I can see a few items I wanna take home too.
It's gonna be Tiki-Licious!
-Bill

I give you . . . Spam en Brochette a la Mode du Rumaki (Spam on a stick, kind of like Rumaki)

K

Yay Bill! Can't wait to hear you and Kathy.

And yum Professor G, that does look tasty.

Can't wait! I thought I was getting a ride with Brook and Cedar, but their car is full of stuff they're selling. Is anyone up near The Northcross Mall area that I can ride with?

Since it's a tiki gathering, it seems like a good opportunity to trade mugs instead of putting them up on ebay not knowing what you'll get for them. Here's what I'm bringing with me:

I have a few Sven Book of Tiki Anniversary mugs. Tiki Farm is nearly sold out of them.
Mana Mana in Blue. It was introduced during Tiki Farm's anniversary, but this is not the limited version. The Anniversary limited version is green.
A local boy mug. Tiki Farm's limited Anniversary edition. It's white with blue accents.
I also might have a boxload by then of Orchids Mugs, ku bottle openers, and stuff that I'd be happy to part with in large quantities for a good trade.
I also have a Cosmic Blaze and a Britiki Blue from Cheeky Tiki London

The only thing I can think of off the top of my head that I'm hunting for is the green Trader Vic's 2002 anniversary mug. Otherwise, I'm open, but leaning towards more tiki farm stuff I don't have. Anybody else trading tiki? Of course, won't work without a ride. I'm working on that.

The Enchanted Lagoon awaits. Tomorrow night looks to be splendid weather and my house smells like bacon. Life is good.

The party starts at 7pm at my house. Wear your tiki and tropical finery (and comfortable shoes!). Bring your bathing suit, any food or drink to share, tiki mugs to swap if you wish, and cash if you might want to purchase something from the vendors. Suggested donation at the door $15. We will have a list of those who've used Paypal. There will be some vintage cars in the driveway, so don't park there unless you plan on staying til Sunday morning. Speaking of getting home, please drink responsibly, and plan ahead for the trip home. I'll post a cab # too.

I am so looking forward to seeing everyone, tasting some wonderful cocktails and seeing some awesome musicians perform. Listen carefully and you might hear the exotic call of a lovely tropical bird. Here's a hint:

Aloha til tomorrow-
Koitiki

Can't wait .......!!!!!! IT'S TONIGHT!!!!!

I'm making up a BIG batch of the Royal Hawaiian cocktail, which has proven to be a popular cocktail at the previous luaus. Get there early to make sure you get some. This is a gin based cocktail, and it's a fine option to the many rum drinks which will be imbibed.

I'll be joined by my lovely and happenin' wife, Hulacat, and the beautiful and always fun, Castlehune.

See y'all TONIGHT!

Dobrolic

I knew I should have booked a flight! :(

C

Can't wait!! ....just a few hours, now...!!

C

SO MUCH FUN!!!!!

MAHALO to Koitiki for an awesome-as-always time!
Wonderful to see everyone, again & meet some new Texas Tiki folks, too :D

Can't wait to do it all again next year!

Thank you for opening your beautiful home to us, KoiTiki. The DJ, bands and vendors were all top-notch, but the best of all was the hospitality.
