Tiki Central / Collecting Tiki

Twelve months of In The Wild Tiki Collecting in Review

Pages: 1 5 replies

After I did my annual purge of excess tiki items at Tiki Oasis in 2013, I started keeping a log of what I bought, when I bought it, how much I paid for each item, the estimated market value of it, and what I eventually sold it for.
After a year of keeping track of all of this, as well as posting it all on Tiki Central Finds for photo reference, I came up with the following totals:

From Sept 1 2013 to Aug 31 2014, I spent $2131 on tiki stuff I found out in the wild. Roughly 215 items. (If I bought matchbooks or postcards in a lot, I only counted the transaction as 1 total item)

I categorize my buys as two types: Stuff I buy for my collection to keep, and stuff I buy solely with the intention of reselling it,( to offset the costs of the to keep stuff!)

Collection stuff I bought to keep total spent was $1078
Resale stuff was $1053

Monthly it came to averaging $177. $87 for resale, and $90 for collecting

The most I spent in any given month was $432 in Feb 2014
The least I spent was $26 in August 2014

The most I spent on collection stuff was $255 in December 2013
The least was October 2013, where I spent $0.

This year seemed like I bought a lot more stuff to keep, and a lot less to sell stuff than in years past. I also bought a couple high priced "outliers" that I typically wouldn't buy. Two of those and a couple large lot purchases accounted for about %25 of my total spent this year.

I went back and posted all the summary shots of last years finds below. If you saw a craigslist ad for this as one lot, for $2131, would you take it?

All in total, looks like a nice tiki collection.

Amazin Buzzy!!
That Ku'legged Table alone is worth more than that I bet...

You must be a Tiki magnet...those are wonderful finds. I agree...the table is fabulous.

That's a great haul for one year! I doubt I could find 1/10th of that in 3 years. I also appreciate how you've broken it down as far as the expenses go. An interesting thread for sure. Mahalo for this!

Great to see what the Buzz buys!

The Maori carvings are my favorite.
